Book Review - Scars Like Wings by Erin Stewart + Giveaway

Ava Lee has lost her parents, her home, her best friend, and even her face in a moment's notice. She doesn't need to look in a mirror to know how she looks like because she sees it in the eyes of everyone around her. After nearly a year after the fire,  her aunt and uncle decide that she should go back to high school. They want her to have a "normal" life being surrounded by other people instead of feeling isolated. 

However, Ava feels that life will never feel normal for her again. And she could forget about making friends because no one wants to be seen with the Burned Girl. Things change when Ava meets another survivor named Piper. She begins to feel that she doesn't have to face the nightmare alone anymore. Piper likes to push Ava outside of her comfort zone and even introduces her to Asad, a boy who loves the theater just as much as she does. Slowly, Ava starts to feel connected to life again but, when Piper starts to struggle, will Ava be able to step up to the challenge?

 I thought this novel was a great and a emotional read. The characters were all well developed and likable. I love how each of the characters helped each other grow and become better versions of themselves.  The novel is an endearing read of someone facing psychological issues after a traumatizing event while finding herself again.

Erin Stewart is the author of SCARS LIKE WINGS, her debut novel. Erin is a graduate of the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern and a BYU undergraduate who works as a freelance writer and editor, as well as a weekly columnist in Salt Lake City.

Book Review - Cilka's Journey by Heather Morris

Sixteen-year-old Cilka is taken to Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp in 1942. There a commandant is taken by her beauty and she is separated from the other women prisoners.  Cilka quickly realizes that any bit of power she has will help her survive. When the war is over, Cilka is charged as a collaborator for sleeping with the enemy. As a result, she is taken to a Siberian prison camp. 

In Siberia, Cilka faces similar challenges and does her best to survive including avoiding the unwanted attention of guards. Cilka crosses path with a kind female doctor who takes Cilka under her wing. Cilka begins to help tend to the ill while, avoiding her own brutal living conditions. As Cilka grows into her role, she discovers her own inner strength to help others while opening up herself to love.

The novel was an interesting read but, I felt like it missing something. What that something is, I am not sure. Cilka's story of enduring and surviving harsh and brutal conditions is heart numbing.  I feel like we were just given a very small glimpse into her extraordinary life. I feel like I would have enjoyed the novel more if we knew more about Cilka. Overall, the novel was a good read for fans of the author.

Book Review - One More Moon: Goodbye Mussolini! One Woman's Story of Fate and Survival by Ralph Webster

In the year 1934, Elsa and her husband, Paul are living a comfortable life in Italy. However, all that begins to change when their daughter, Mela tells them of a hotel called Pensione Alexandria that is on sale. Elsa and her husband are suffering through some financial issues and decided that the hotel might be the answers to their troubles. When, the war breaks out Italy and Germany joins forces which cause a strain on travelers and when the situation gets worse, it makes it harder for Elsa and her family to escape. Will Elsa and her husband, Paul be able to escape the war?

Elsa's grandson writes her story through her voice and invites readers into her journey to escape the Italy before they follow the footsteps of Germany to imprison their fellow Jewish countrymen. The novel was written very beautifully and was told in an interesting way. However, I felt like in the beginning, the book was going to be about the two women  they found in the fields or a bit more detailed about Elsa's journey. Instead, it felt like I was reading a lot of fluff and not enough meat bones about her journey. Overall, it was still an enjoyable book and I look forward to reading more from the author.
