Book Review - The Marvellers by Dhonielle Clayton

The Marvellers by Dhonielle Clayton is about a young girl, Ella Durand, who gets to attend a magical school. Eleven year old Ella will be the first Conjuror to attend the Arancum Training Institute. The Arcanum is a magical school that is located in the clouds were Marvellers, people who can use magic, attend to learn and practice their magic.  There are a lot of different types of magic, like blending Indian spices to create elixirs, bartering with mischievous Irish pixies, and even knitting that can see into the future.

Ella is excited to be accepted into the school. However, she knows that being the first for anything isn’t always easy and a lot of people are not accepting of change. She tries her best to fit in but she is met with hostility by students and teachers alike. Ella eventually finds kindred spirits with two fellow students and her mentor, Masterji Thakur. Her roommate, Brigit, is a girl who hates magic and doesn’t want to be at school. She would rather be back in NYC with her guardian. Jason was assigned to be Ella’s guide around school and he likes being around magical creatures.

Just when Ella finally finds a community that is supportive of her, the unthinkable happens. A dangerous criminal, the Ace of Anarchy, escapes from her prison. It looks like she was able to escape with the help of a Conjuror. Everyone is worried what the Ace is up to and Ella becomes a person of interest. Ella’s support system crumbles when Masterji Thakur unexpectedly goes on vacation and isn’t available. She decides that she will have to rely on her friends and her growing powers, if she is to clear her name and find Masterji Thakur.

I thought that the book was an interesting read. I like that the author included characters and food from various cultures. I thought this was going to be a Harry Potter novel copy but it had a lot of good things going for it but the execution could have been better. The author did create an extraordinary sounding world. It seemed like a magical and amazing place. However, I wish the author went into more details about certain things. The author would use world specific terms or talk about something, without going into much detail about it. I felt like a lot of things were left unexplained, such as: why does that elevator appear for Ella? Do the people who lose their powers gain it back? Why were the conjurors left out? I am hoping that the author goes into more detail about it in the next novel.

At times, the book moved very slowly and nothing would happen. Towards the end of the novel, the plot starts to pick up but the interaction with the villain lasts like a blink of an eye. It did seem a bit random because the villain and Ella didn’t know each other. I wish the author went into more detail or provided more action packed scenes. While the characters were interesting and diverse, sometimes I had a hard time liking Ella. She was unnecessarily mean to Jason when he was trying to show her around the school. Then  another time she got mad and jealous over the attention Bridgit got when she won the mini planet toy. I would have liked it if Ella spent some time explaining why she felt certain ways. I am curious to read more about Ella and her classmates' newest adventure.

Book Review - The Pack by Lisi Harrison

The girls that board the Charm House or the Center for Human-Animal Reform and Manners, are there because they have an animal light inside them that needs to be tamed. Sadie is the new girl and she just wants to stay out of trouble and blend in with the rest of the students. That is until she learns she has the Lion light and a group of popular girls include her in their group called the Pack.  Sadie finds herself at the center of attention and is consumed by social drama. The Charm school is supposed to be a sanctuary but, someone is targeting the girls. Will Sadie be able to help find the mastermind?

The book was a fun read and had a few unexpected twists. It was interesting seeing Sadie accept her abilities and her powers to lead and not be just a follower. Some of the dialogue between the girls at the school were funny but, might be too much for some children/readers. For example, Lindsey and the other girls remark on each others physical appearance or Sadie gets bullied because her hair doesn't look appealing, it might seem like bullying. Instead of tampering the comments about physical appearance, they seem to enjoy making remarks about it to each other. Overall, it's a fun read and I would read other books in the series.

Book Review - Armadillo Antics by Bill Martin Jr. + Giveaway

I thought the book was cute and beautifully illustrated. However, I felt like it was missing something. The story felt convoluted, forced, and boring at times. I did like that they include some facts about armadillos.

About The Book:

Title: ARMADILLO ANTICS

Author: Bill Martin Jr., Michael Sampson, Nathalie Beauvois (Illustrations)

Pub. Date: April 26, 2022

Publisher: Brown Books Kids

Formats: Hardcover, eBook

Pages: 32

Find it: GoodreadsAmazon, B&NTBD, Bookshop.org

Join the Armadillo on His Nightly Romp!

Children will love the rhythm and rhyme that are hallmarks of the beloved author duo of Chicka Chicka 1, 2, 3 as they follow the adventurous armadillo through nighttime fun as dawn approaches.

Bill Martin Jr was the beloved author of more than three hundred books for children and teachers, including the classics Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? and Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.

Michael Sampson taught kindergarten through fourth grade before meeting fellow literacy expert Bill Martin Jr at a conference in Tucson, Arizona in 1978. They established a lifelong friendship and collaborated on many bestselling and award-winning books for children, including Chicka Chicka 1, 2, 3 and Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See?

Reviews:

"A wonderfully musical nighttime romp with stunning illustrations." --Matt de la Peña, Newbery Medal-Winning, New York Times Bestselling Author

"Beauvois, whose elaborately textured, highly dimensional surfaces recognize the paper collage legacy of Eric Carle and Lois Ehlert, creates a series of striking contrasts to the repeating text's simple rhymes. As the mammals appear, ready to "romp and play till the night is done," they're shown in deep jewel tones with patterning reminiscent of a Missoni sweater... tagging along with this self-possessed, graphically stylish critter and chanting its name as it leaps, digs, and dines makes for a memorable outing." --Publishers Weekly, starred review

"For a romping night in the life of a roly-poly armadillo, pick up Armadillo Antics!"--Parade Magazine

"This short rhyming story about a night in the life of an armadillo is cozy and soothing. Beauvois's collage-style art, especially the armadillo curled up inside its next, gives Eric Carle vibes. A collection of eight facts on the final page will fascinate kids and grown-ups alike."--Parents Magazine

Book Review - Heartless Prince by Angela De Vito + Giveaway

A power hungry witch has destroyed Evony's kingdom and has left her an orphan. Prince Ammon is drawn to her ability to sense familiars, who are servants to the witches, if they are near the kingdom's shield.  Evony has always had a crush on Ammon and dreams of the day they spend it together.

Prince Ammon is desperate to prove himself to his family and the kingdom. He decides to take Evony outside the borders to fight the familiars. This was everything Evony dreamed of happening until they are captured by the witch Aradia. The witch steals Ammon's heart and leaves his body to turn into a familiar.

Then Ammon's sister, Nissa, is then taken hostage by Aradia's daughter. Evony is determined to bring back the royal family safe and sound. She descends the mysterious Witchlands to retrieve Ammon's heart and save Nissa. Evony comes across another witch that tells her about her past that will change everything.

I thought the graphic novel was a beautifully done and had an interesting story. I am not sure if the authors plan on continuing the story but, the story felt short. There wasn't much back story given to Evony's history and it has the same story line as other novels. I would be interested in reading more about the characters.

Book Review - Going Wild (The Infamous Frankie Lorde) by Brittany Geragotelis + Giveaway

Frankie loved using her unique set of skills against a crooked real estate mogul with her friend, Ollie. However, she is getting restless especially when her dad is still stuck in prison. Frankie struggles to come to terms with her being stuck in Connecticut a lot longer than she expected.

While volunteering at a local animal shelter, Frankie and Ollie learn that there is an exotic animal farm supplying the wealthy with illegal animals such as lions, tigers, and snakes. Frankie wants to do something to protect the endangered animals that are being held captive in horrendous conditions. She decides she will find a way to free the animals while capturing the bad guys in a trap of their own.

I like reading books that are targeted towards young readers as they usually filled with interesting story lines sprinkled with humor. I didn't really care for this book as it boring and completely unrealistic. I know a middle school aged child who is an expert thief is a bit unrealistic and should be taken with a grain of salt but, other things was just completely unbelievable and this didn't strike me as a fantasy novel. I felt it hard that a middle school-er could dress up and fool a bunch of adults that they are adults. I also found Frankie's personality confusing, she was acting like an "adult" but, did seriously childish things. Personally, I like books with a bit of humor and found this book just boring and unappealing. I wouldn't be interested in reading other books in this series.

**Disclosure - I relieved a free unedited copy of this book in exchange for an honest opinion**

About The Book:

Title: GOING WILD (The Infamous Frankie Lorde #2)

Author: Brittany Geragotelis

Pub. Date: August 3, 2021

Publisher: Pixel + Ink

Formats: Hardcover, eBook

Pages: 304

Find it:  GoodreadsAmazon, Kindle, B&N, iBooks, Kobo, TBDBookshop.org

In this upper middle grade series, a pre-teen international thief turns over a new leaf (sort of) to right societal wrongs in her snooty new town. For Frankie, using her less-than-legal set of skills to pull a heist against a crooked real estate mogul with the help of her new friend Ollie was super gratifying, but she's getting restless now. In the second book in the series, the potentially reformed thief dives into the dangerous and political world of trafficking exotic animals. Frankie and Ollie hear that there's a dangerous exotic animal farm supplying Greenwich's elite with lions and tigers and bears. Feeling an instant kinship with the endangered creatures locked away in their cages, Frankie makes it her mission to find the perpetrators, free the beautiful beasts, and ensnare the bad guys in a trap of her own.

Reviews:

"Fast and cinematic."—School Library Journal

"A thriller for fans of plot-driven stories."—Kirkus Reviews
