Book Review - The Rebel and the Rake by Emily Sullivan

Rafe Davies is known for being a charismatic rake. However, in reality he is working for the crown as one of their most valuable agents. Rafe is both relentless and reckless and there isn't a mission that he couldn't complete before. But then he meets lady's companion Miss Sylvia Sparrow while on assignment and Rafe finds himself distracted by her beauty.

Most women throw themselves at Rafe's feet but, Sylvia had enough of those type of men. She once trusted a man and she paid dearly for her mistake. Sylvia is determined to ignore Rafe but, during a few chance encounters, she is surprised by Rafe's personality and finds herself attracted to him. She realizes that Rafe might be keeping a few secrets of his own.

I thought the book was an easy and enjoyable read. I did find that the middle of the book was a bit slow and I thought the ending took forever. When they figured out the bad guy behind the blackmailing scheme the novel still had around 75 or so additional pages from the end. If you like steamy romance novels then you will enjoy this book.

Book Review - A Duke Worth Fighting For by Christina Britton

The Duke of Carlisle, Daniel Hayle, returns from Waterloo a hero after the war. He is covered in scars and dreads going to London and facing society. He fears his lack of social skills and his scars will make it hard for him to find a wife. He decides that he needs all the help he can get with navigating and socializing with London's elite.

Margery Kitteridge lost her husband to the war and she is mourning his death. She receives a blackmail letter accusing him of desertion and Margery is desperate to protect his reputation. She unfortunately doesn't have the money to pay the blackmailer. However, when Daniel Hayle arrives, she senses an opportunity for them both to get what they want. She will help him find a bride and in exchange he will give her money to pay off the blackmailer.

The book was an easy read and had a few twists but, most were predictable. I would classify this as a steamy romance novel and that was a bit unexpected for me (although, I should have guessed by the cover).  The novel is the third book in the series but, I was able to read this book as standalone. It was charming story but, it had lagged during the middle parts. Readers who enjoy a steamy romance with a bit of heart and mystery will enjoy this book.

Book Review - The End of Her by Shari Lapena

Stephanie and Patrick are trying adjusting to life with their colicky twin girls. The babies are a handful and Stephanie struggles with sleep deprivation but, she feels that she has everything she ever wanted.

A woman from Patrick's past, Erica, appears and makes a deadly accusation. She claims that Patrick's first wife didn't die by accident but, Patrick murdered her. Patrick insists that he is innocent and that Erica is only after their money.  As Stephanie interacts with Patrick and Erica, Stephanie begins to suspect that her husband might be a murderer. As Stephanie begins to lose her trust in Patrick, she wonders who is telling the truth?

This book was a devious good read that leaves the reader guessing until the end. I was a little disappointed in the ending where many of the characters had their back against the wall but, we never know what became of them. I didn't care of most of the characters but, I still wanted to know their fates. Overall, it was a good book and I look forward to reading other books by the author.

Book Review - One Little Lie by Colleen Coble + Giveaway

Jane Hardy is promoted to the new Chief of police in Pelican Harbor, Alabama after her father's sudden retirement. Jane barely has time to catch her breath when her father is arrested for theft and implicated in a murder. As Jane begins to investigate the wave of crime, she realizes that someone is after her family and they will stop at nothing to make sure that she and her father pay.

Jane and her father left a cult fifteen years ago but, Jane still searches for her mother who refused to leave with them. Reid Bechtol is a well-known investigating journalist who produces documentaries. His latest project is covering Jane's career. Jane is the first female Chief and she doesn't want to be the subject of his documentaries but, the committee who appointed her loves the idea.  Jane finds herself leaning on Reid but, Reid is trying to keep distance between them because of a secret. Will Jane be able to find out the truth while they work together to help prove her father's innocence?

I have read a few of the author's books and enjoyed them. While the novel is the first book in the series, I felt like there were portions of the story that could have been more detailed. The plot was predictable but, had a few surprises. While I did enjoy the book, I felt like a lot was going on and felt like I was getting pummeled with details. For example, the part where seemingly out of nowhere Jane goes off to search for her mother during the middle of a murder investigation. I believe the author is trying to build the story for the next book but, I would have preferred if the book stayed more focused.

It started with one little lie. But Jane Hardy will do everything in her power to uncover the truth in this gripping new romantic suspense.

After escaping with her father from a cult fifteen years ago, Jane has searched relentlessly for her mother—who refused to leave—ever since. Could someone from that horrible past have found them?

Reid Bechtol is well-known for his documentaries, and his latest project involves covering Jane's career. Jane has little interest in the attention, but the committee who appointed her loves the idea of the publicity.

Book Review - The Adventurers Guild #2: Twilight of the Elves by Zack Loran Clark & Nick Eliopulos + Giveaway

Zed and his friends managed to save Freestone from being destroyed, but, the fight has just begun. A dark power has risen up in the elven city which has caused their dead to rise again. As the elves flee to Freestone, the natives are filled with resent towards the elves as resources become scarce. The leader of the elves, Queen Me'Shala, reaches out to the Adventurers Guild with a mission to take back the elven city.

Zed with his friends take on the mission to tackle the powerful magic taking over the elven city. The friends will have to rely on each other if they want to destroy the evil forces. However, Zed and his best friend, Brock are keeping secrets from each other. Will they be able to trust each other to complete the mission?

I found this book to be a fun and interesting read. It reminds me a bit of Warcraft and Lord of the Rings.  However, this is the second book in the series and while it could be read as a stand-alone, I think it would be best to read the book in order. Overall, a fun read for anyone who loves fantasy novels.

I should probably start at the beginning, Zed wrote, when things first went wrong?

Zed, Brock, and their friends may have saved Freestone from destruction, but the fight against the Dangers is far from over. No one knows what to expect next from the dark power that forced the elves to abandon their city. And the influx of elf refugees in Freestone strains resources and brews resentment among the townspeople. Things have shifted between best friends Zed and Brock, as well, with their friendship crumbling under the weight of the secrets they're keeping from each other.

When tensions reach an all-time high, Queen Me'Shala, leader of the elves, approaches the Adventurers Guild with a mission. She wants a small group of adventurers to go behind the king's back on a covert mission to save her city, and Zed, Brock, Liza, Jett, Micah, and their elven friend Fel join the quest. To face a powerful form of magic thought to be extinct, the adventurers will have to learn how to rely on each other and fight harder than ever before.

Don't miss this second installment of Zack Loran Clark and Nicholas Eliopulos's Adventurers Guild trilogy, where the stakes are raised, the action is breathless, and the dangers will stop even the bravest of hearts.
