Book Review - Sunburst (Sky King Ranch #2) by Susan May Warren

Ranger Kingston is a former Navy SEAL and a lifelong bachelor dedicated to his job. When he was called upon to rescue his brother, Colt, who has been kidnapped by terrorists in Nigeria, he never imagined he would come across the one woman who he could never forget.

Noemi Sutton was attempting to reunite a young girl with her family in Boko Haram territory. However, she finds herself and the girl taken hostage, along with several others.  Ranger is able to get the hostages away from their captors, but he will need Noemi's help if they want to leave Nigeria unharmed.

Noemi suggests that they pose as husband and wife. When her uncle finds out, he insist that the pair do a traditional Nigerian wedding, binding the two to each other. As Noemi and Ranger try to find a way to safety, they discover the real reason why she was kidnapped and no one around her might be safe.

This was the second book in the series but, it can be read as a standalone. I enjoyed the first book of the series but, I didn't really like this book as much. I felt like Noemi was supposed to be trained in the field but, she kept doing things and letting her feelings get the better of her causing them to be in trouble. I did like that she was witty and I liked their back to forth banter. I didn't like that this book had tons of switches from the future to the present as sometimes, it wasn't very clear. I did like learning about Nigerian customs and the cultural norms. The story does end in a cliffhanger and leads way to the next book in the series.

Book Review - The Secrets We Share by Edwin Hill

Natalie Cavanaugh and Glenn Abbott do not look like sisters. Natalie is a Boston cop and acts like a cop off duty too. She prefers to shy away from the spotlight and wear unassuming clothing. Her younger sister, Glenn, lives for the attention. She likes to be dressed to the nines and camera ready. Glenn has spent many years cultivating her baking blog and the publication of her new book. She feels that her hard work is finally going to  pay off.

Twenty years ago, their father's body was found in the words behind their house. They believed their mother might be guilty of the crime but, someone else takes blame for it. Glenn prefers to move forward and ignore her darker past. However, someone who is reading her blog seems to know something and have been leaving anonymous ominous messages. A few unsettling coincidences occur that involve Glenn and her family and it that throws them in the cross hairs of the police and someone from their past.

As Natalie digs into the murders, she wonders about the people close to Glenn and how much she knows. Natalie believes that her father was murdered by their neighbor, with who he was having an affair with.  However, if the current events are connected with the past, there might be things that Natalie needs to uncover before it's too late.

This is my second book by the author and I enjoyed this book more than the other one. The book was suspenseful and had a few twists that I wasn't able to guess. The characters were well developed and each had secrets that were waiting to be discovered. At times, the novel was a bit overwhelming when I was trying to keep track of all the different characters and how they overlap. I also liked that Hester made a guest appearance in this book. I would be interested in reading other books by the author.

Book Review - Zara's Rules for Finding Hidden Treasure by Hena Khan

Zara loves taking bike rides with her friends. She is so excited to ride her new bike but, she is devastated when it is stolen from the park. Her parents refuse to get her a new bike unless she earns the money herself to buy it. Zara decides to start a business with her friends to sell unwanted knickknacks from their basements. Zara is excited when her business is a hit with the neighbors but, after a mistake she ends up having to shutter her budding business.

I thought the book was a good read and had a few enjoyable moments. It was fun to watch Zara learn from her mistakes and grow. The book had themes of religion, working together, being fair, being persistent,  and taking personal responsibility. It was also interesting to read how Zara helped the people around her grow from her mistake. The book is a delightful read for children of all ages with an important message of accountability while learning about different faiths.

Book Review - The Prisoner's Wife by Maggie Brookes

Izabella, a Czech farm girl,  and Bill, a British prisoner of war,  fell in love during the war and decide to get married and go on the run. In the middle of the night, they travel through the countryside to avoid being captured. Izzy is dressed as a man to avoid detection and the punishment for her act of treason. The duo were able to evade capture until they were cornered by Nazi soldiers and tracking dogs.

Izzy's disguise works and the Nazi assumes that the pair are escaped British soldiers. They are transported to a POW work camp. Together as newly weds, they face deplorable living conditions along with the constant fear that Izzy will be exposed. In the middle of darkness, comes a small beacon of hope as the couple befriends a small group of prisoners. The group of men become their new family as they are willing to sacrifice everything to save Izzy from being discovered.

The novel is inspired by a true story and I thought it would be an endearing read about hope during one of history's darkest moments. However, I was sadly disappointed how boring this novel was. I have read many historical fiction books before but, this book barely had any story to it. It was mostly describing the living conditions of the camps and the people Izzy and Bill have met. I felt like it quickly got repetitive to the point of boredom. I had a hard time connecting with Izzy as a person. As readers, we rarely got to see and feel her plight and the danger of her exposure or learn anything about her and Bill. I was more than 80% done before, I called it quits on this book.

Book Review - Raising the Horseman by Serena Valentino + Giveaway

Kat Van Tassel doesn't want anything to do with Sleepy Hollow and it's ghostly history. However, things doesn't go as Kat plans. She receives the original Katrina van Tassel's diary on the two hundredth anniversary of the Headless Horseman's original haunting. As Kat reads Katrina's diary, she notices a few events from Kat's past starting to merge with her present. Then Kat comes across a mysterious stranger who has Kat questioning everything she thought was true.

I thought the book had an interesting premise but, I felt like it was missing something. I found the book to be a bit predictable and dull at times. I thought that the book would focused on the horseman, he would have a bigger role and would have been described in detail. I felt like he was used mostly as a prop. I thought the book would have some spooky elements but, this didn't have any. It was an okay book but, not something I would read again.

From the New York Times best-selling author of Disney’s Villains series comes a ghostly new stand-alone novel that reimagines The Legend of Sleepy Hollow through the eyes of a modern teen.

The two-hundredth anniversary of the Headless Horseman's legendary haunting of Sleepy Hollow is approaching, but Kat van Tassel wants nothing to do with the town's superstitious celebrations. As a descendant of the original Katrina van Tassel, Kat knows she’s expected to fulfill her ancestor’s legacy by someday marrying her longtime boyfriend and running the prestigious family estate. But Kat dreams of a life outside Sleepy Hollow.

Then Kat meets Isadora, a new girl in town who challenges Kat to reexamine those expectations, opens her eyes to the possibility that ghosts are real, and makes her question who she truly wants to be . . . and be with.

When Kat is given the original Katrina’s diary, a new legend begins to take shape, one that weaves together the past and the present in eerie ways. Can Kat uncover a two-hundred-year-old secret, and trace its shocking reverberations in her own life, in time to protect what she truly loves?

Fans of Serena Valentino will delight in this supernatural coming-of-age tale that finally gives the women of Sleepy Hollow a chance to tell their side of the story.

Book Review - Serwa Boateng's Guide to Vampire Hunting by Roseanne A. Brown + Giveaway

Twelve year old Serwa Boateng catches fireflies. Unlike, the usually harmless summer activity, for Serwa it can be life or death. The fireflies she hunts are really shapeshifting vampires that prey on the innocent. They drain their victim's blood and possess their minds. Serwa and her parents have been protecting people from these threats for years in silence and secrecy.

Serwa is the best slayer for her age and she knows more about combat than things "normal" children do. However, everything changes when a witch destroys her home while searching for a drum that can bring about mass destruction. Instead of taking Serwa with them, her parents decide to leave her with her extended family for her own safety, while they search for the witch. Serwa is disappointed that she won't be joining her parents in the hunt. Serwa finds herself out of her element dealing with going to school and managing friendships.

When Serwa adjusts to her new norm, she realizes a vampire has infiltrated her school. After Serwa was unsuccessful at removing the vampire on her own, she decides to recruit a few friends to help. Will Serwa be able to fight the vampire with the help of her new friends?

I thought the book was an interesting read. I enjoyed reading about mythology and customs from Ghana. I loved that the author included an in depth informational guide about her culture. The beginning was a bit slow but, it gradually got better. I enjoyed reading how Serwa grew into her own independent person and adapted to her new surroundings. I liked how the book showed different sides of  "good and evil" and none was portrayed as just good or bad but, shades of grey. I look forward to seeing how the series progresses.

 About The Book:

Title: SERWA BOATENG'S GUIDE TO VAMPIRE HUNTING (Serwa Boateng #1)

Author: Roseanne A. Brown

Pub. Date: September 6, 2022

Publisher: Rick Riordan Presents

Formats: Hardcover, eBook

Pages: 400

Best-selling author Rick Riordan presents best-selling YA author Roseanne A. Brown's middle grade debut about a pre-teen vampire slayer with a strong helping of Ghanaian folklore.

For most kids, catching fireflies is a fun summer activity. For twelve-year-old Serwa Boateng, it's a matter of life and death.

That's because Serwa knows that some fireflies are really adze, shapeshifting vampires from the forests of Southeastern Ghana. Adze prey on the blood of innocents, possessing their minds and turning them into hulking monsters, and for generations, slayers like Serwa and her parents have protected an unknowing public from their threats.

Serwa is the best adze slayer her age, and she knew how to use a crossbow before she could even ride a bike. But when an obayifo (witch) destroys her childhood home while searching for a drum, do Serwa's parents take her with them on their quest to defeat her? No. Instead, they dump Serwa with her hippie aunt and cryptic-obsessed cousin in the middle of Nowheresville, Maryland "for her own safety." Now, instead of crossbows and battle armor, she's dealing with mean girls and algebra, and for the first time in her life she doesn't have to carry a staff everywhere she goes, which is . . . kind of nice, actually.

Just as Serwa starts to get the hang of this whole normal girl who doesn't punch vampires every day thing, an adze infiltrates her school. It's up to her to whip some of her classmates into monster-fighting shape before all of them become firefly food. And when she uncovers a secret that upends everything she thought she knew about her family's role in the slayer vs. adze war, Serwa will have to decide which side of herself--normal girl or slayer--is the right one.

After all, seventh grade is hard enough without adding vampires to the mix.
