Book Review - Lolo Weaver Swims Upstream by Polly Farquhar + Giveaway

Lolo Weaver Swims Upstream by Polly Farquhar is about a young girl trying to come to terms with the death of her beloved grandfather. Lolo Weaver is a young strong willed girl. When she gets an idea, she tries to execute it without thinking it through.

Her grandfather used to foster dogs and it brought great joy to the family. When he passed away, Lolo’s grandmother decided to give away the family’s dog, Hank. The entire family including Hank, was in despair over this death. Lolo is desperate to get Hank back and knows that it will cheer up her grandmother. She also feels that it was her fault that they gave the dog away.

Lolo is stuck in summer school with a teacher who doesn’t seem to like her. Lolo feels that the teacher is out to get her. She will need to find a way to get back Hank without alerting her teacher or her parents of her disappearance or plans.

She decides to take her grandfather’s canoe and paddle across the lake to retrieve Hank. However, she didn’t take into account that Hank’s new owner, Noah, wouldn't want to give him up. After convincing Noah that her grandmother would need Hank more, Noah gives up his ownership of the dog on the condition that he joins her on the trip back to her grandmother’s. What started off as a simple plan ended up turning messy when Lolo was unsure if her plan to take Hank from Noah was the best course of action. Will Lolo give back Hank to Noah or will she keep Hank?

The book was an okay read. I didn’t really care for Lolo as she was a bit temperamental at times. However, she did have a heart of gold. She cared about other people’s feelings and tried to help them even if it was detrimental to her own well being. It was interesting seeing her work through her different emotions and trying to understand her feelings.

The novel was filled with characters who were trying to do best with what they had. Lolo’s parents and the community were struggling after the draining of the lake. Many of the residents were struggling to stay afloat. I thought it was interesting that the author decided to include this tidbit into the story as it lends how the characters might be feeling with their current circumstances. Even though Lolo seems to think that her teacher had it out for her and that her family deserved to have Hank more, it was nice seeing her learn and accept that things aren’t always as we assume. The book is a heartwarming read about a young girl learning compassion and  dealing with her grief.

"Not since Ramona Quimby has a character marched right out of a book with so much bravado, humor, and heart."--Barbara O'Connor, New York Times bestselling author of Wish

A headstrong girl’s quest to steal back her family’s dog goes awry in this humorous and compassionate novel.

Lolo is stuck in summer school with a teacher who is out to get her while her family is still reeling from her grandfather’s death. Even his dog is mourning, howling outside all night and every night. Finally, lovable old Hank is sent to a farm across the lake that takes foster dogs.

And it’s all Lolo’s fault.

Lolo knows she has to get Hank back. In a tippy canoe, Lolo crosses the almost-dried-out lake to steal her dog back. But she runs into Noah, a student in her summer school class and Hank's new owner—and he loves Hank as much as she does.

As Lolo’s plan unravels and her uneasy alliance with Noah grows into a friendship, the question of what’s best for Hank becomes muddier. Can Lolo manage to do the right thing—for once?

Itch author Polly Farquhar returns to Ohio with a tale of a big-hearted girl searching for answers to tough questions in all the wrong places. Fans of Gary Schmidt will love Farquhar’s blend of honesty, humor, and heart.

Book Review - I Kick and I Fly by Ruchira Gupta + Giveaway

I Kick and I Fly by Ruchira Gupta is about a young Indian girl who tries to escape her fate of being sold into the sex trade by her father.  Heera and her family are a part of the Nat culture whose people are nomadic and are unable to find work due to cultural differences  with the local peoples. Heera is a fourteen year old girl who currently lives on the outskirts of the Red Light District in Bihar, India. She knows it is only a matter of time before she is sold to provide for and feed her family. Her fate is virtually sealed, just like every other female member of her family and community.

Heera hates watching her cousin, Mira Di, live this lifestyle. Heera has seen her cousin, once vibrant and happy, now use drugs to numb herself. She also sees how abusive and cruel men treat Mira Di. As she grows older, Heera is afraid that her time to break free is running out.

Due to Heera’s nomadic roots, she struggles to fit in with others at school. It doesn’t help that her best friend’s (Rosy) brother goes out of his way to torture and bully her. Heera decides to stand up to her bully and she gets expelled after hitting him. She fears that after this recent run in, that her time has become even more limited. Since Heera is no longer able to attend school, her family feels that she should start contributing to the household.

When a local hostel owner and activist, Rini Di, shows up at Heera's home, Heera feels that her luck might have finally changed. Rini Di is able to provide Heera and her family enough money to repay their debts and allow Heera to return back to school. Rini Di feels for Heera and her plight and wants to help the family out.

Heera is given opportunities that she didn’t have access to before and that will change the trajectory of her life. She is able to learn kung fu and readily has access to food. She no longer has to worry about her next meal. While she learns martial arts, she starts to realize that she has more control over her body than she thought. That she is more than just a commodity to be sold or preyed upon and that her body can protect herself and loved ones.

As Heera learns that she can disrupt her own perceived destiny, her beloved friend goes missing. Heera is determined to find out what happened to Rosy and she is willing to stop at nothing to find out the truth. When she finds out that Rosy is in New York, she decides to embark on a daring rescue mission in a country she has never been to.

The novel is based on experiences and stories that survivors shared with the author when they were working as activists. The book was a heart wrenching and eye opening read. I had a general idea of sex trafficking but it was very limited. Reading about Heera’s story helped me empathize with victims and made me realize it’s a lot more common than previously I thought.

The characters were realistic, well developed and relatable. I found myself crying over the treatment and situations that  Heera and others faced. I also found myself rejoicing when Heera and her mother found their voices and were brave enough to stand up against their oppressors.  I enjoyed reading about the Nat culture and the challenges they faced as a nomadic community.  I liked that the author included resources for readers who want to get involved or to learn more. I think this is a good read for anyone who is interested in learning about different human experiences.

"In I Kick and I Fly, Ruchira Gupta has given young readers an irresistible story, and also one that could save lives. This book is a gift." -- Gloria Steinem

A propulsive social justice adventure by renowned activist and award-winning documentarian Ruchira Gupta, I Kick and I Fly is an inspiring, hopeful story of triumph about a girl in Bihar, India, who escapes being sold into the sex trade when a local hostel owner helps her to understand the value of her body through kung fu.

On the outskirts of the Red Light District in Bihar, India, fourteen-year-old Heera is living on borrowed time until her father sells her into the sex trade to help feed their family and repay his loans. It is, as she's been told, the fate of the women in her community to end up here. But watching her cousin, Mira Di, live this life day in and day out is hard enough. To live it feels like the worst fate imaginable. And after a run-in with a bully leads to her expulsion from school, it feels closer than ever.

But when a local hostel owner shows up at Heera's home with the money to repay her family's debt, Heera begins to learn that fate can change. Destiny can be disrupted. Heroics can be contagious.

It's at the local hostel for at risk girls that Heera is given a transformative opportunity: learning kung fu with the other girls. Through the practice of martial arts, she starts to understand that her body isn't a an object to be commodified and preyed upon, but a vessel through which she can protect herself and those around her. And when Heera discovers the whereabouts of her missing friend, Rosy, through a kung fu pen pal in the US, she makes the decision to embark on a daring rescue mission to New York in an attempt to save her.

A triumphant, shocking account inspired by Ruchira Gupta's experience making the Emmy-award winning documentary, The Selling of Innocents, this is an unforgettable story of overcoming adversity by a life-long activist who has dedicated her life to creating a world where no child is bought or sold.

Book Review - Bonding: A Love Story About People and and Their Parasites by Matthew Erman + Giveaway

The tale is old as time but, with a twist. This graphic novel is a love story between a man and a woman but, they have parasites attached to them. Marcus has been alone and is new to the dating scene. He is dealing with the trauma of losing his best friend. Laura has been drifting into life and relationship with no purpose. The pair is on their first date and things are going well until Marcus's parasite rejects him as a host and Marcus almost dies.

I normally love reading graphic novels and this one seemed like it would be a quirky fun read. However, this has been one of the most confusing and frustrating graphic novel I ever read. I didn't even make it to the end as it seemed pointless.

There is no flow and the story jumps back and forth without warning. It's hard understanding what was happening between the characters because they were in the present and then in the past back and forth. Some of the male characters looked alike and it was hard to tell them apart. When Marcus and Laura goes to a club, Laura is confront by a stalker (another story line that went nowhere) that looks exactly like Marcus except that dude had one curl. Then one of the character goes for a drive to think and then finds someone that looks exactly like them but, they are dead. The story then never explains who that dead person was and what the importance was.

The second part of the story is Marcus and Laura's son who is struggling. The story isn't really clear if he is struggling with anxiety or just dealing with teenage drama. He has this crush that he is obsessed with and their story line is even more confusing. He talks about God and stuff that their world is experiencing but, we as readers have no idea as the world building has been so sparse. The only details we know about the world is that everyone has a slug attached to them and if the slug detaches from the host, they both die. This graphic novel had so much potential and failed with it's execution.

“Wear your heart on your sleeve.”  That’s the saying. But in BONDING, people wear their anxiety on their chests – in the form of a  parasite that shows everyone just what you’re feeling on the inside …

WEAR YOUR LOVE ON YOUR CHEST

A man, a woman—and their parasites. Marcus has been alone since the loss of his closest friend and has just recently entered into the dating scene, while Laura has drifted in and out of relationships since high school. They meet, they have a great first date, and Marcus almost dies—because the slug-like parasite that everybody carries in this world nearly rejects him, its host. BONDING is a funny, quirky, and honest look at love, in a world where everyone wears their anxiety, not on their sleeves, but on their chest like big ol' leeches.

Fans of Matthew Erman's work on Vault Comics' WITCHBLOOD and Archaia's JIM HENSON'S THE DARK CRYSTAL: AGE OF RESISTANCE will find lots to love in BONDING. Fans of Image Comics' ICE CREAM MAN VOL. 1, DC Comics' COLLAPSER and even books like THE HOST by Stephenie Meyer and THE PARASITOLOGY TRILOGY by Mira Grant will enjoy this foray into all the stressors of dating...where a parasite is the least of your worries (unless it kills you, that is.)
