Book Review - Burden of Proof by Davis Bunn

 

 

 

Three weeks after his twenty-third birthday, Ethan missed the chance to save his brother's life when he was assassinated at the courthouse in Jacksonville, Florida. Ethan has felt a profound disconnect between the man he was meant to be and the man he became after that fateful day. His days are a jumbled mess as he constantly replays the scene of his failure again and again.

His brother's widow enters his life and calls for his help to discover who was really behind his brother's murder. Ethan is shocked to learn that she and her late husband were involved in a much larger case than he knew—one that threatens the global power system. When Ethan joins the search for answers, he will travel back to his past and find a way of redeeming his future.

I thought this novel had an interesting spin. However, I found myself having a hard time getting into the novel. I thought the main character was annoying and all the female characters were either stupid and annoying or aggressive and rude. The entire novel felt like a chore and was very boring to read. I stopped reading halfway and never looked back.

Book Review - The Missing Years by Lexie Elliott

Ailsa Calder's mother recently willed her an old Scottish manor. However, only half of the house belongs to her. The other half belongs to her father who disappeared twenty-seven years ago with diamonds. Ailsa is torn between leaving her life in London behind and returning to her childhood home. She returns to get the house in order before selling and asks her half-sister to join her.

While spending time at the Manse, Ailsa feels claustrophobic and can't sleep. She feels drained and tired. She senses someone is watching her and especially when she hears stories about the manor's past. Then one night an intruder shows up causing Ailsa to fear what secrets the Manse might be hiding. Will Ailsa be able to move on from her father's disappearance?

I have read the "French Girl" and liked it but, this novel left me baffled. While the "villain" was unexpected, I felt disappointed. The novel dragged on and on only for a mediocre ending. I was left with more questions than answers. This novel is an easy pass and not worth even a second glance.

Book Review - The Battle is O'er by Laura Vosika + Giveaway

 In the series finale, Shawn hopes to regain everything he has lost. He hopes to gain back his job, his son, and hopefully, Amy.  Shawn learns of a prophecy and tries to change it, especially, the letter that details the fate of his son. If Shawn doesn't prevent it, the future might be in jeopardy.

I read a summary for the previous books in the series as, without it, a reader would definitely get lost in the storyline. I found the novel to have an interesting premise with realistic characters and development. I like that the story was told from the past, future, and present. Overall, it was an interesting book but I think to fully appreciate the novel, I would have to read the books earlier in the series to completely grasp the storyline.
