Book Review - The Swallowtail Legacy 2: Betrayal by the Book by Michael D. Beil

 

Betrayal By the Book by Michael D. Beil is about a young girl who tries to solve a murder. Twelve year old Lark is excited about the upcoming writer’s conference. For a week, Swallowtail Island hosts the Swallowtales Writers Conference that brings writers, publishers, agents, and fellow book lovers together for exclusive book related content.

Lark is ecstatic when she is assigned to be a page for her favorite author, Ann E. Keyhart. Lark  has devoured and re-read Ann’s book several times and Lark considers the book to be one of her favorites. Ann arrives on the island after agreeing at the last minute to do the conference. She brings her bubbly assistant, Didi, with her. However, Lark quickly learns what the saying means about never meeting your idols.

Lark tries to do her job as a page for Ann professionally but Lark can see why many people don’t like her. Ann is pushy, aggressive, and mean to everyone and always needs to get her way. Thus when Didi needs help finding a place on the island, Lark jumps at the chance to help Didi, while Ann gets ready to attend the conference. At least this way, Lark can get a small break from the author.

Didi takes Lark to a special place on the island where Didi decided she wanted to be a writer. The duo bond before Lark takes off to prepare for the conference. Later in the day, Lark is devastated to learn that Didi ends up dead. When the cause of her death is disclosed, Lark feels like something doesn’t add up.

Lark feels that someone else might have been the target instead. As Lark digs deeper into the case, a few things stand out to her, like Ann has tons of enemies and Didi’s computer vanishes from the hotel suite she was staying in. She also finds out that Didi had a glass bird that is very similar to the one Lark’s late mother had. Will Lark be able to figure out what happened to Didi?

This middle grade level book is the second in the series and can be read as a standalone. There is a wider mystery that connects the two books in the series, though. I found the book to be an entertaining read and it was fun trying to guess who was behind the murder and their motive. It was a bit predictable but I enjoyed reading along with Lark and her adventures.

However, the one thing I didn’t like was that the entire book had a lot of coincidences. For example, it just so happens the person that Lark was searching for was in the right area at the right time. Then Didi’s roommate, Suzy, just so happened to performing in the same location that Didi was. It would be fun if it happens once or so but, it was just too many coincidences for it to be realistic. If you liked the first book, then you would enjoy the next book in the series.

Book Review - The Last Book Party by Karen Dukess

It is the summer of 1987 and 25-year-old Eve Rosen is an aspiring writer who is stuck in a low-level assistant job. She is unable to get her writing career off the ground and she's been stuck in her brilliant brother's shadow growing up. When she feels her professional options are being limited, she jumps at the chance to attend a summer gathering at Cape Cope hosted by the famous New Yorker writer Henry Grey and his poet wife, Tillie.

She finds herself dazzled by the guests and has a crush on Franny Grey, Henry, and Tillie's son. She is excited when she receives an offer to become Henry's research assistant. Eve is excited when she is invited to the exclusive and famed "Book Party", where guests are invited to dress as literary characters. However, the night of the party turns uncomfortable when Eve discovers the truth behind the people she became involved with.

I am very disappointed with this book. I didn't find myself liking any of the characters and found them to be selfish and full of themselves. Eve was committing acts of adultery more than once but, was overcome with grief and misery when someone else did it. The novel was predictable and I found it to be rather pointless.

Book Review - The Secret Life of Sarah Hollenbeck by Bethany Turner

Sarah Hollenbeck has gone through her second and probably hardest life transformation. She was married to her high school sweetheart when they got divorced. Unsure of her life path, she joins a book club to pass the time. She discovers she has a passion for writing steamy romance novels. When she decides to become a Christian, she is afraid of how the members of her church would react. It also doesn't help that she is falling in love with the new pastor, either. Sarah is also on the hook for one last novel, but will she able to write another steamy novel? Will Sarah be able to reconcile with her past? Will the church members be able to accept her?

At first I love reading this book, I couldn't put it down. I probably read more than half of the book within a few hours, but towards the middle, I didn't feel the same magnetic pull. I felt some portions of the book moved too quickly, and the characters didn't get to develop. Sadly, I also didn't have a connection with any of the characters. Sarah went from reinventing herself to being a moody child acting adult. However, I would be open to read other works by the author.

Book Review - A Name Unknown (Shadows Over England #1) by Roseanna M. White

Rosemary Gresham was an orphaned at a young age when her family became sick. She was taken in by a bar owner along with a band of other orphans. Together, they rob from wealthy to survive in the streets. However, a wealthy gentleman approaches Rosemary to spy on a British citizen to determine if his loyalties lie with Britain or Germany. The mysterious gentleman knows more about Rosemary and is offering her a great deal of money that her family desperately needs.  

Peter Holstein has dual citizenship with Germany and Britain which causes people to mistrust him. His neighbors think he sympathizes with Germany and terrorize him whenever he goes. Peter is quite elegantly with the written word and is an established writer but writes under a pen name because of his German name.  When Rosemary arrives at his door and willing to help him look through his files to prove his loyalty to England; Peter believes his prayers has been answered. Will Rosemary be able to prove where Peter's true loyalty lie? Will Peter be able to fight for his happiness?

The novel had an interesting premise but I felt the book was about 100 pages to long. I felt that it dragged on and it had a lot of unnecessary fluff pieces. The ending had a bit of a twist but it wasn't enough to warrant me to ever want to read this book again. I wasn't very fond of Rosemary either, that she thinks that because the wealthy has so much that she is entitled to steal from them. They wanted the wealthy to treat them with respect and they found several people from the gentle class who treated her with respect but yet they continue to act that everyone who is wealthy deserves to be stolen from. If they don't want to be disrespected they shouldn't treat other people that way.

Book Review - The Travelers by Chris Pavone

The newest book from New York Times bestselling author, The Travelers by Chris Pavone is a fast pace international spy thriller. Will Rhodes is like most Americans -- newly married at a job where he can barely make ends meet. As each day passes, Will contemplates his life, did he marry the right woman and should he switch career paths? On one of his assignments, he becomes entrance with a fellow travel writer and finds it hard to stop thinking about her. After a series of bad decisions, Will is thrown into one dangerous situation after another. It becomes very clear that he can't trust anyone and everyone has a secret they are willing to kill for.

While, the book was a page turner; I found some parts to be boring. The characters were realistic and fully developed but I can't say I was rooting for any of them. Almost half way thorough the book, you start to realize where the book is handing and the plot becomes predictable. A good read if you are a fan of the genre/author but I wouldn't see myself rereading this book again.
