Book Review - Turtle in Paradise: The Graphic Novel by Jennifer L. Holm

It's 1935, and eleven-year-old Turtle knows that life will never go as one expects it. She knows better than to expect a Hollywood ending. She knows that money and opportunity is scarce. When her mother gets a job as a housekeeper, Turtle is sent to live with her relatives in Florida. Florida is not what Turtle expected and before long, Turtle starts to come out of her shell.

The graphic novel was beautiful illustrated with bright vibrant colors. The story is sweet and heart breaking at time but, a cute read. Personally, I like graphic novels with humor so, I didn't really care for this story too much. I might be opened to reading other graphic novels by the author.

Book Review - The Third Mushroom by Jennifer L. Holm

Ellie's grandpa Melvin is a world-renowned scientist with two PhDs who is stuck in the body of a fourteen-year-old boy. Ellie is happy to have her grandfather around even if he eats all the food in the fridge. Melvin doesn't exactly fit in middle school but, Ellie is excited for them to team up together in the county science fair. No one could expect how groundbreaking their experiment turns out to be when they may have discovered the formula for eternal youth. However, when Ellie's cat, Jonas Salk, becomes sick, the stakes become higher. Is the key to happiness eternal life?

This is the second novel in the series, but, I only read this book. It seems that each book can be read as a standalone. However, I would recommend reading the books in order because I felt like I was missing something. I can't say that I liked any of the main characters. I thought Melvin was quite abrasive at times.  I didn't really feel connected to any of the characters and didn't really care for them. I did think the novel teaches some good lessons about life and I appreciate the science infused portion of the book.

Ellie's grandpa, Melvin is a world famous scientist. However, he is in the body of a fourteen-year-old boy. While he doesn't really fit in at home or at school, Ellie is still happy to have him around. Ellie and Melvin team up for the science fair to find the "fountain of eternal youth".  No one will know how close they will get to finding the key to eternal youth. However, they will soon learn is happiness guaranteed with eternal life?

I found the book to be a fun and quirky read. I like the scientific references, especially the cat's name. The bond between Ellie and her grandfather, Melvin was both fun and endearing. However, it was a bit weird that they were around the same age and Ellie's friend is in love with Melvin. Overall, a fun and great read.
