Book Review - The Secrets She Keeps by Michael Robotham

Agatha knows everything about Meghan but, Meghan doesn't even know Agatha. Agatha looks forward to seeing Meghan every day when she comes into the grocery store where Agatha works.  Agatha thinks Meghan has a perfect life. Meghan is effortlessly chic and has two children, a handsome husband, a devoted marriage, and a gorgeous house. Meghan is the writer of a popular parenting blog that Agatha follows and reads each night while waiting for her boyfriend and the father of her unborn child to return her calls.

Meghan's life might look perfect from the outside but, her perfect life is filled with secrets and doubts. Meghan and her family have a few secrets that they will keep secret no matter what the cost. After an incident occurs, the pair finds their lives and future entwined with each other.

I was excited to read the book but, I did find the novel to be predictable. A few of the secrets weren't noteworthy but, as the story progressed we did find out more shocking ones.  However, I did find the writing to be engrossing and made a normally boring train ride entertaining. I might be open to reading more books by the author in the future.

Book Review - The Dating Charade by Melissa Ferguson + Giveaway

Cassie Everson had so many bad dates that she became an expert at escaping them. She has a plan that allows her to escape her date easily. After years of meeting men who try to woo her with the wrong intentions, Cassie is ready to give up hope on having a husband and children.

Firefighter Jett Bentley is content being alone but, when Cassie's online dating profile catches his eye, he remembers her from their high school days. Cassie Everson was the popular girl that Jett had a crush on for years. Hoping to reconnect, Jett sends Cassie a message and invites her on a first date.

After a series of events, Cassie and Jett go on their first date. Surprisingly, they both have a great time and can't wait to see each other. However, fate drops three children on each of them to take care of. They both decide to do the mature thing and hide the kids from each other while they sort out their feelings for each other. Will Jett and Cassie be able to work out their feelings for each other?

The novel was a fun and cute read. I like that even though Cassie was jaded, she still tried to open up her heart to love. I felt like there could have been a bit more character development between the two characters. The novel billed itself as a romantic comedy but, it felt more like a novel about two separate people adopting children and learning to care about others than themselves. Overall, I like the idea of family being people who you choose and not only the ones you are born into.

Book Review - The How and the Why by Cynthia Hand + Giveaway

Cassandra McMurtrey has everything she could want. Her parents are kind and generous and she wouldn't trade them for anything. However, Cass is adopted and she has questions about who she is. She wants to know more about herself that her adoptive parents can't answer no matter how much they love her. 

Eighteen years ago, a sixteen-year-old girl becomes pregnant. She decides to give her daughter up for adoption and writes her unborn daughter a series of letters. The novel alternates between the expectant mother and Cass searching for answers.

I thought the novel to be a cute read. I am not adopted but, I have considered adoption and the novels give insight on how a child might feel about being adopted. For example, Cass and her best friend, Nyla has conflicting views on finding their birth parent.  I enjoyed reading the interactions with Cass and her friends. I love the supportive relationship Cass has with her friends and family. The author did a good job portraying that love and support can come from anywhere.

Book Review - The Winters by Lisa Gabriele

He is a recent widower and a wealthy politician. While she spent most of her life in poverty.  Her new home is filled with memories of Max's beautiful first wife, Rebekah. Rebekah haunts the young woman's dreams and fuels her insecurities. While his daughter, Dani likes to make her life a living hell. She realizes that she doesn't have a place in the weird family dynamic between Max and Dani. They have a relationship dynamic that is both confuses and intrigues her.  As she grows more in love with Max, she worries about her relationship with Dani especially, when family secrets don't stay buried.

I don't like novels where the main character doesn't have a name. It makes it harder to discuss the protagonist when you don't know what to call them. I feel like when you don't name something, it's like you don't claim or love that person. Nor does it make it very easy to relate to the character.  And I very much feel like this novel wasn't a labor of love but, something that was quickly put together.  The novel takes forever to move along and the plot twists were very predictable. I thought I would have "fallen out of my seat" at least once during any of the revelations instead they were all met by my yawning. The novel was a complete bore and waste of time.

Book Review - Rules For Vanishing Rules For Vanishing by Kate Alice Marshall

Once a year, a magical road appears in the middle of the forest. Near the end of the road, the ghost of Lucy Gallow is waiting for new travelers. The game isn't for the faint of heart as losing can cost you everything. 

One year ago, Sara's sister, Becca disappeared. Sara knows that Becca went to find the ghost of Lucy Gallows. However, Becca is trapped on the road and unable to return to back to Briar Glen. Nobody believes that the tale of Lucy is real. However, Sara knows it's real and she is going to prove it.

Sara gathers her friends in the woods to search for Becca when the road appears in front of them. All they have to do is walk down the path. However, they soon learn that the path is filled with mysterious things and many of them are not from this world. They learn that following the path means following its rules and there will fatal consequences for anyone who breaks them. Will Sara be able to pay the toll necessary to find her sister?

The novel was an interesting and engrossing read. I like included "transcripts" of text messages and voicemails. However, I did find portions of the book confusing and the ending left me with a lot of questions. I am hoping that there is a sequel or this is made into a movie because it was a really interesting story!

Book Review - Claiming the Drakos Heir by Jennifer Faye + Giveaway

The novel follows the basic formula for a good romance novel: two people who do not communicate with each other and assume the worst of each other. However, the novel does have a few emotional rollercoasters, especially when dealing with a custody battle of a young child. I enjoyed reading and finding out the backstory of each character especially the mysterious Apollo. A definite must-read for anyone who loves romance novels.

Book Review - The Memory House by Rachel Hauck

Beck Holiday is still reeling eighteen years later over the death of her beloved father. She and her mother lost him during the attacks on 9/11. She can no longer remember him and lost most of her memories of him. Recently, Beck was suspended for police misconduct with a suspect. She is struggling to get her life back in order especially, with life alternating secret. She is unsure what her next steps in life should be.

When Beck receives a mysterious letter in the main alerting her of an inheritance from a woman she doesn't remember, she is confused but, takes it as a sign. She travels to the northern coast of Florida to view the house she inherited. During her stay in Florida, Beck realizes that there are some things she can't forget forever. Will the trip be able to heal her heart and restore her memories?

I have a few books from Rachel Hauck on my TBR pile. Out of the three, I decided to start with this novel first. Boy, was I sadly disappointed. The book was told from the perspective of four different people who all share a connection with the house. They all had a connection with each other. I was hardly able to build a bond or connection with any of the characters. More than 75% into the book, I lost interest in the book. There was nothing interesting going on that warranted me to waste more time reading this novel.  I think some portion of the book was poorly written and felt choppy in some parts. For example, when Beck experience a flashback of her memories and Beck believes God is speaking to her, she stumbles around into Bruno's childhood home. Then Bruno and his mother were talking about her and the incident like she can't overhear them and it's an everyday occurrence. I am not sure why, but that whole incident just felt weird to me. Overall, the storyline did not grab me enough to want to finish this novel.

Book Review - Fat Angie: Rebel Girl Revolution by E.E. Charlton-Trujillo + Giveaway

Angie is miserable and the sophomore year just began. Her girlfriend, KC, recently moved away to spend time with her father in Texas. Her best friend, Jake has been distant and flaky. And Greg, her bully, has become increasingly violent towards Angie. Her sister had an over the top funeral with a statue dedicated to her. Her mother, Connie, placed a symbolic urn on their mantel to mourn her daughter's death. All of this just adds to the sadness Angie is feeling. During her sister's ceremony, a visiting soldier gave Angie a letter from her sister. The letter was a list of places she wanted the two of them to visit together when they got home from the war.

After an incident at school, her mother threatens to send Angie to a treatment center. Angie decides to enlist a childhood friend along with her schoolmates to tackle the list her sister left.  Together they travel across the state to cross off items from her sister's list. Will this list be what Angie needs to finally let her sister go and find herself?

I thought the portions of the book where Angie and her friends travel to different landmarks to be interesting. It was nice to see someone be supportive and caring towards Angie after having to deal with hostility at home and at school. The book was a bit " raw" to me in the sense, that it was very graphic and had violence towards people who didn't fit the "standard mold". However, it was nice seeing some characters getting their chance of redemption.

Book Review - Ladybug Girl and the Rescue Dogs by Jacky Davis and David Soman

Lulu the Ladybug Girl is at the local farmers market when she notices a dog-adoption fair happening. Once Lulu meets all the dogs, she wants to take them all home but her family already has one dog, Bingo which is more than enough for them. Since she is unable to adopt any more dogs, she volunteers to help take care the dogs and help promote the pet-adoption fair since it doesn't receive much foot traffic.

Even though this is the tenth book in the Ladybug Girl series, this was my first time reading a book from the series. The tots I read too enjoyed the book and the fun illustrations and many of them spied toys in the illustration similar to the ones they own. They also like the illustrations with the different ways to take care of a dog, for example, the dog who couldn't play catch. I liked how the book showed how one small change can have a big impact. It is a great read for any animal lovers as well!

The book was a quick and interesting read. It was packed with quirky sayings and catchphrases like "She wanted to lose her cream cheese bagel thinking how close that horse hoof had come to his temple". It was a bit annoying that Cassidy kept flip flopping on her heart's desire and what she thinks she really needs. She would "crave" Jarrod but then push him away, after the first 3 times it got annoying. As with most romance novels, it had a predictable ending but it was a good read overall.

Book Review - "Anne of Green Gables," My Daughter, and Me: What My Favorite Book Taught Me about Grace, Belonging, and the Orphan in Us All by Lorilee Craker

The memoir spins the author's favorite and her life and her adopted daughter's life in a way where they are all interconnected with the common thread all of them being orphans and wanting a place to belong. I should mention I have not read "Anne of Green Gables" and should have because the book didn't make much sense to me or was very entertaining to read at certain points. At times, the book seemed a bit of  a rant other times it seems like a bit of response and feelings towards the book. It does have a heartwarming tale of how being an orphan one deals with abandonment, not having a place to "belong",  and looking for your "real" parents. A good read for any "Anne of Green Gables" fan everyone else, just skip it.
