Book Review - The Plot - The Graphic Novel, Volume 1 by Michael Moreci

The Plot - The Graphic Novel, Volume 1 by Michael Moreci is about a man, Chase Blaine, who tried running from his family’s past. Chase wanted nothing to do with his family and their wealth. He wanted to live his own life without the weight of his family’s name burdening him.

When his estranged older brother and sister in law unexpectedly dies, he has no choice but to come back home. He is the only living relative and becomes the guardian of his niece and nephew, MacKenzie and Zach. He decides to move them back to his childhood home in Cape Augusta. He doesn’t have enough space in his current apartment and he doesn’t want the children to live in the home where their parents were killed. Their ancestral home has been in the family for decades and is built on a remote and vast bogland. The home is filled with family secrets  that won’t stay buried forever.

The graphic novel was beautifully illustrated with dark and gloomy colors. The story behind the house and the family’s past was interesting but I felt like I was left with more questions than answers. I felt that the graphic novel hinted at a lot of mysteries and devious things but never actually spent any time explaining it.  I do wish that there was more plot and explanations in the first volume because I can see readers abandoning the series because there wasn’t a lot to keep them hooked. I am open to reading the next volume to see what happens next but I wouldn’t go out of my way to get it.

Book Review - You Let Me In by Camilla Bruce

Cassandra Tipp is an infamous and eccentric bestselling novelist. She is known for her vivid imagination.  She is a famous recluse and one day she is gone but, leaves behind a final manuscript.

Everyone in town remembers the events that lead to her infamous trial. She has been acquitted with the insanity defense. Her husband died mysteriously and has never been solved. A few years later, her brother and father died in a murder-suicide.

In her final manuscript, Cassandra details her life history. She details what happened in the happens and what she believes happened to her husband. However, her story comes with a price.

This novel is an epic waste of time. It took forever to get anywhere and the author filled the book with useless details. I read more than half of the novel but, just lost interest in it. I feel like there was nothing really keeping me tethered to the book and to read more. I tossed this book to the side and started reading something that I actually cared to read.

Book Review - The Archer at Dawn by Swati Teerdhala + Giveaway

Kunal and Esha are working together as rebels on a rescue mission to take back what's theirs. They attend the upcoming Sun Mela to infiltrate Vardaan's court. Kunal pretends to be a dedicated soldier to protect the king. Esha becomes an adviser to Prince Harun and uses her cover to seek allies for their cause. Together Esha and Kunal will try to rescue the lost princess Reha. However, as the Sun Mela begins, secrets and a dangerous force are waiting for them. It causes them to doubt their loyalties to each other and their cause. Will Esha and Kunal be able to succeed in their mission?

I enjoyed reading the second novel as we get a more in-depth view of each character. We see Kunal struggle between his loyalties to the rebels, his solider friends, and to the family, he never knew he had. We see Esha as a complicated woman who wants to avenge her family but, she is sacrificing herself to her old promise. In this book, Kunal and Esha's romantic relationship isn't on display as much as the first book. This book mostly focused on the other characters which I enjoyed. I felt like this book did move a bit slow because I couldn't wait to see what happens but, the ending made it worth it. I can't wait to read the final book!

Book Review - The Vine Witch by Luanne G. Smith + Giveaway

Elena Boureanu is a young vine witch who wakes up from a curse after being dormant for seven years. As she regains her senses, she realizes everything she knew has changed. The vineyards at Château Renard has long relied on the talents of vine witches, whose spells help create world-renowned wine. However, her beloved vineyard fell to ruin when Elena becomes cursed.

After breaking free from the curse that confined her, Elena is hellbent on avenging herself. However, Elena must find a way to return to her former life to regain her power. The vineyard that she was destined to inherit is now in possession of a stranger who doesn't believe in magic.

Vigneron Jean-Paul Marte believes the following of science will help him craft the best wine. He doesn't believe in the locals' beliefs of witches. But Elena knows a hex when she sees one, and Marte's vineyard is covered in them. She convinces Marte to let her stay on to help the vines heal but, she has to hide her true identity. While Elena is helping the vineyard recover, will she be able to find the one who hexed her?

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. I was actually both disappointed and happy there was going to be a second book to the series!  Some parts of the novel were predictable but, there were a few surprises. I like that even though the two main characters were stubborn, there weren't many petty fights over a lack of communication. They both knew what they wanted and worked together to get what they wanted. Overall, it was a decent debut and I look forward to the second book!

FROM THE EDITOR
It starts with a toad. A slimy one, too, warts and all. But as you may have guessed, with witches involved, this toad just happens to be enchanted. This toad, in fact, is the witch—and now that she’s free, she’s out for revenge against whoever has cursed her.

Elena Boureanu, former toad, is a vine witch. Her magic is responsible for creating some of the best wine of the age, and her legacy is all but ruined when she finally returns home. The vineyard’s new owner may be handsome, but he’s a city man of science who knows nothing about the valley’s vine witch tradition. And on top of that, Elena can clearly detect dark magic surrounding the estate. She knows her own curse must be connected to the hex on the fields, and she vows to put her world back into balance.

Elena’s story of redemption may be fantasy, but it feels real enough to touch. Reading this novel is like falling into an Instagram picture—atmospheric, and surrounded by the smells and tastes of the natural world. I hope you’ll fall with me. ―Adrienne Procaccini, Editor

A young witch emerges from a curse to find her world upended in this gripping fantasy of betrayal, vengeance, and self-discovery set in turn-of-the-century France.

For centuries, the vineyards at Château Renard have depended on the talent of their vine witches, whose spells help create the world-renowned wine of the Chanceaux Valley. Then the skill of divining harvests fell into ruin when sorcière Elena Boureanu was blindsided by a curse. Now, after breaking the spell that confined her to the shallows of a marshland and weakened her magic, Elena is struggling to return to her former life. And the vineyard she was destined to inherit is now in the possession of a handsome stranger.

Vigneron Jean-Paul Martel naively favors science over superstition, and he certainly doesn’t endorse the locals’ belief in witches. But Elena knows a hex when she sees one, and the vineyard is covered in them. To stay on and help the vines recover, she’ll have to hide her true identity, along with her plans for revenge against whoever stole seven winters of her life. And she won’t rest until she can defy the evil powers that are still a threat to herself, Jean-Paul, and the ancient vine-witch legacy in the rolling hills of the Chanceaux Valley.

Book Review - The Bone Charmer by Breeana Shields + Giveaway

In Saskia's world, bones and blood is a source of power and privilege. Bones can be used to reveal the past, present, and the future. Each village has a designated bone charmer that is responsible for performing readings for the townsfolk.  In Midwood, Saskia's mother is the town's bone charmer.

Every resident has the opportunity to have a special bone reading called a kenning to identify their best path for their future. The kenning determines the apprenticeships for the young villagers. Saskia is hoping that she will become a tutor and not a bone charmer like her mother and grandmother. However, her worst dreams come true when she is matched as a bone charmer. Against her wishes, her mother performs a matchmaking reading and pairs her with Bram. Bram is a mysterious boy whose past is littered with hints of violence and darkness.

Saskia is disappointed with her mom because she knew her mother picked the path Saskia wouldn't want. She believes that her mother doesn't take her happiness into account. Distraught with her chosen path, Saskia accidentally fractures one of the kenning bones. Broken bones are considered bad luck but, Saskia's kenning bone was imbued with extra magic to help garner vivid images of her future. Which means Saskia's life is in great danger as her future has been split.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I first read the summary of the book. I thought it was going to be over the top but, I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed this book. The premise of using bones to see the future and pick a career path was interesting. The story had a lot of mystery especially, with two alternate paths unfolding for Saskia. I thought I would be disappointed with one of the alternate paths but, they were both interesting.  The novel was beautifully written and I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

"I was absolutely swept away by the world of The Bone Charmer." – Kendare Blake, #1 NYT Bestselling author of Three Dark Crowns

In Saskia’s world, bones are the source of all power. They tell the future, reveal the past, and expose secrets in the present. Each village has a designated seer who performs readings for the townsfolk, and in Midwood, the Bone Charmer is Saskia’s mother.

On the day of her kenning—a special bone reading that determines the apprenticeships of all seventeen-year-olds—Saskia’s worst fears come true. She receives an assignment to train as a Bone Charmer, like her mother, and even worse, a match-making reading that pairs her with Bram—a boy who has suspicious tattoos that hint of violence.

Saskia knows her mother saw multiple paths for her, yet chose one she knew Saskia wouldn’t want. Their argument leads to a fracture in one of the bones. Broken bones are always bad luck, but this particular set of bones have been infused with extra magic, and so the break has devastating consequences—Saskia’s future has split as well. Now she will live her two potential paths simultaneously. Only one future can survive. And Saskia’s life is in danger in both.
