Book Review - Witchlight by Jessi Zabarsky

Lelek is a witch on a mission. As she makes her way through the city, she kidnaps a peasant girl, Sanja. As they continue to travel together, the pair becomes closer. The duo travel to different cities to find the missing half of Lelek's soul so, she can regain her magical powers. As they continue the journey together, they both search for ways to be whole again.

The graphic novel was beautifully illustrated.  I thought the storyline was interesting but, I felt like the writing was a bit choppy. I found myself lost a few times while I was reading. I wish the characters were a bit more developed.

Book Review - Fairy Mom and Me #2: Fairy in Waiting by Sophie Kinsella + Giveaway

Ella Brook knows that she has to wait to become a fairy like her mother. She can't wait to be a fairy to have her own sparkly wings and Computawand. Ella and her mother are put through four different situations where the help of magic would be helpful. However, will Ella learn she doesn't need magic to save the day?

I like the book was split up into four small short stories that can be read in a few minutes. The book has a lot of laughs out loud moments when Ella's mom tries to use magic but, makes the situation worse. I found this book to be a great bonding experience when reading together. I liked that the book also included activities in the end that can be done together.

Book Review - She Who Knows No Fear: Another Tale of the Heart by by Barbara Bras + Giveaway

Cassie is finally getting her dream come true. She is marrying her best friend who is also the love her life. Cassie will never have to be alone again. Until Zack didn't return from surfing one afternoon which causes Cassie to panic that she might lose Zack. Will Cassie be able to get over her fears?

I have not read the first book but it doesn't seem that readers need to read both books. When I first read the summary, I thought the book was about Cassie dealing with Zack disappearing. However, it turns out the book focuses on Cassie dealing with her abandonment issues. I was quite puzzled by the number of different story plots added in but they didn't develop further. For example, Cassie finds out that her grandmother was divorced, hearing thoughts from her dead grandmother and also having the ability to read other people's thoughts. Cassie's ability to read people's thoughts felt like it was added as an afterthought and it was never mentioned by her friends or family. I felt Cassie was a bit childish and helpless by herself. I felt like the conversations were stilted and unauthentic. Overall, I think it was an interesting story but it should have been developed a bit more.

Book Review - Sleight by Jennifer Sommersby + Giveaway

Genevieve Flannery is used to her mother, Delia's sudden outbursts and when she starts talking to herself. Geni is also accustomed to the circus life that she and her mother are apart of along with daily workouts of acrobatics. On a day that seems to be like any other performance, something goes horribly wrong and Delia dies during her performance.  While still reeling from the tragedy, Geni receives a package from her mother that is filled with more mystery than answers. Suddenly, Geni is also able to see visions into a time that isn't her own. Are the package and Geni's visions related? What was behind Delia's death?

I always loved stories about the circus and this one didn't disappoint. I found all the characters to be interesting and relatable but my favorite character was the baby elephant, Houdini. Houdini was definitely a treat to read about and enjoyed every single scene he was in. I am a little disappointed he didn't have more scenes but honestly, it probably wouldn't have added much to the story. I found the novel to be interesting and it had a few surprises. There were a few things I  didn't like was that there wasn't much detail about the circus life and the bad guy's identity was outed after a few characters in without much fanfare along with why didn't Delia seek help sooner from same people who help Geni. It was a fun read and would definitely read the second book if the author decided to make this a sequel.

Delia smiles at the shadow only she sees—

Something slams into her. The lyra whirls like a half-dollar spinning on its edge.

My mother is thrown backward.

And she falls.

Growing up in the Cinzio Traveling Players Company, Genevieve Flannery is accustomed to a life most teenagers could never imagine: daily workouts of extravagant acrobatics; an extended family of clowns; wild animals for pets; and her mother, Delia, whose mind has always been tortured by visions—but whose love Geni never questions. In a world of performers who astonish and amaze on a daily basis, Delia’s ghostly hallucinations never seemed all that strange . . . until the evening Geni and her mother are performing an aerial routine they’ve done hundreds of times, and Delia falls to her death.

That night, a dark curtain in Geni’s life opens. Everything has changed.

Still reeling from the tragedy, the Cinzio Traveling Players are also adjusting to the circus’s new owner: a generous, mysterious man whose connection to the circus—Geni suspects—has a dark and dangerous history. And suddenly Geni is stumbling into a new reality of her own, her life interrupted daily by the terrors only Delia used to be able to see.

As the visions around her grow stronger, Geni isn’t sure who she can trust. Even worse, she’s starting to question whether she can trust her own mind.
