Book Review - Don't Turn Around by Jessica Barry

Cait Monaghan and Rebecca McRae are driving together in the middle of the night to a clinic. This is their first time meeting each other. As they drive together through desolate roads, they both realize they have secrets to protect. Secrets that might endanger both of them.

When a truck starts following them, they assume it's teenagers pranking them or someone with road rage. It shortly becomes clear that the person driving the truck is actually hunting them for fun and they are out for blood.

As they continue to drive, the ride keeps getting more dangerous. The secrets they kept buried in the past are out to haunt them. Someone wants one of them and is willing to stop at nothing to get what they want. With the secrets they have, it could be anyone wanting to hurt them. If they want to get out alive, Cait and Rebecca will have to start trusting each other before it's too late.

The first half of the novel kept me intrigued and full of suspense. At first, I liked that alternating characters but, after a while, it got annoying because some of the characters didn't really play a part in the mystery. I am assuming the author did that for the reader to guess who the mysterious person behind the wheel was. The ending was a bit disappointing for me because it felt abrupt and it wasn't what I was expecting. However, I still found the book to be an enjoyable read and look forward to reading other books by the author.

In 1952, Darby McLaughlin decides to leave her home to enroll in secretary school in New York City. She arrives at the Barbizon Hotel and realizes that she is surrounded by beautiful women. While she considers herself to be very plain looking.  Darby becomes homesick and falls prey into her roommates' cruelty. When she befriends Esme, a maid at the hotel, she is exposed to a different side of New York City. Esme takes Darby to downtown jazz clubs, where the music causes Darby to feel things she keeps bottled up.

Half a century later, the Barbizon hotel is converted into condos. However, the infamous incident involving a hotel maid falling to her death still taints the hotel's history. When Darby crosses path with journalist Rose Lewin, Rose becomes obsessed with finding out about Darby's past. Rose welcomes this distraction as her personal life starts to fall apart. As Rose digs deeper into Darby's past her true motives become muddle with her search of the truth.

I have read "The Address" and enjoyed it. The book was well written and the premise was interesting. However, I thought the plot was a bit dull and found that some of the characters to be very basic.  As a person who went through a recent heartbreak, I couldn't picture myself simply falling for a new person in less than a week. It took time to mourn and even understand what exactly went wrong. While this book was disappointing, I am looking forward to reading other books by the author.

Book Review - Starving Hearts (Triangular Trade Trilogy, #1) by Janine Mendenhall

While attending a family social event, Annette Chetwyn was assaulted and suffers  nightmares from the attack. She was saved by a mysterious man who she is unable to find or remember who he is.  Annette's mother is determined for her daughter to find a husband even though Annette would rather marry for love.  Peter Adsley is the second heir to the family fortune and in turn would have to find his fortune elsewhere. However, he decides to join the clergy and seeks a wife to provide companionship.  Will Annette and Peter be able to find love? Will their faith in God be restored?

The book had an interesting story line and kept you guessing until the very end. The story was filled with historical themes while fusing elements of mystery, romance and intrigue.  However, towards the middle of the book I found Annette and Peter to quite annoying and tiresome. A good book if you like stories around this time period but it just wasn't for me.
