Book Review - The Secret to Happiness by Suzanne Woods Fisher

The Secret to Happiness  by Suzanne Woods Fisher is about a young woman who is dealing with the aftermath of a career ending mistake. Callie Dixon had it all. She was a chef at a top restaurant and managed the catering team for a hotel. Everything was going so well until she was fired from her job. Callie is usually meticulous and well organized, but she forgot to put a sauce in the fridge overnight. A member of her staff thought Callie took out the sauce and served it to a hotel meeting filled with people from the food safety department. Unfortunately for Callie, many people got sick and she was booted from her job.

Callie always had a purpose in life until recently when she lost her job. She takes an assistant position with an old coworker teaching students how to make ice cream. There she crosses paths with her beloved aunt that she had lost contact with. She decides that she needs a break and invites herself to her aunt’s home in Cape Cod to regroup and plan her next steps. Callie knows why she made the mistake but she is struggling to come to terms with the reason behind it.

Little does Callie know that her aunt’s home is also an ice cream shop that is runned by her cousin, Dawn. Dawn doesn’t have patience with Callie’s pity party. She pushes Callie to take a community class about the secret of happiness. It’s the last thing Callie wants to think about right now but her solemn instructor, Bruno Bianco, is persistent with Callie. He believes that if Callie attends his class and reads his book, that she will be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. However, Bruno believes that she needs to hit rock bottom before she can figure out what is missing from her life. Will Callie be able to find her life’s purpose?

I have read several books by the author and have enjoyed most of her books. The book is the second book in the series but I was able to read the book as a standalone. I found this book to be very enjoyable to read with many fun and interesting characters.  I enjoyed reading Callie’s interaction with Cowboy Leo.

I like reading about the techniques they used to make ice cream and the different flavor combinations. I never had curry flavored ice cream but it seems interesting. I like reading how Callie tackled new recipes and was finding her joy in cooking and being useful to her family.

I really liked the happiness snippets and blurbs. I found that they were helpful and could be applied to everyday life. I like when books weave helpful life information into stories especially when the stories are entertaining.  The book is straightforward and didn’t have any unexpected turns. If you like cozy romantic novels where the main character discovers their passion for life, then you would like this book.

Book Review - Never Miss by Melissa Koslin

Kadance Tolle used to be a former CIA sniper and she is known for her special sets of skills. She comes from a long line of assassins. However, she is on the run from her family but, she endangers herself when she saves Lyndon Vaile's life. Kadance knows the danger of exposing herself but, she feels compelled to help Lyndon. Together Kadance and Lyndon will need to work together to figure out who is after Lyndon's research.

I read more than half of the book before I decided this book wasn't for me. I felt like the characters were boring, unrealistic, and wooden. I didn't care for the writing style and felt like it was very monotone. I am disappointed as I was looking forward to reading this novel.

Book Review - The Paris Betrayal by James R. Hannibal

Company spy Ben Calix had a mission go wrong in Rome and when he returns to Paris, he finds his entire world turned upside down. He was targeted in an ambush and a sniper is after him. He tries to get in contact with his agency and was told that they are severing their ties with him and French SWAT is after him.

Ben is desperate for answers and he is trying to avoid a biochemical attack from happening. As he tries to escape, he unwittingly causes another civilian to end up in the Company's cross hairs. He decides to travel across Europe to connect with former team members to help him stop the attack. While Ben is looking for a plan, he will also deal with the fallout from being kicked out of the Company.

I thought the novel was a quick and fast paced read. I can't say that I care for any of the characters or what happened to them because there were a lot of characters involved. I felt that the novel was a bit too predictable and I was able to guess all the twists before they were disclosed. The book was an okay read and I would be open to reading other books by the author.

Book Review - The Red Lotus by Chris Bohjalian

When Alexis met her boyfriend, Austin, it was on a Saturday night. They didn't meet at a bar but, in an emergency room where Alexis treated a bullet wound in Austin's arm. Six months later, the pair decided to travel to Vietnam on a bike tour. Alexis feels that Austin might be the one and decides to accompany Austin to Vietnam. Austin wanted to pay his respects to the place where his father and uncle fought in the war.

Alexis is back at their hotel room waiting for him to return from his solo ride. She becomes worried as the night progresses and she hears nothing from Austin. The police arrive to the hotel and tells Alexis that Austin has disappeared. The only thing they have found is a yellow energy gel pack that he dropped on the side of the road. As Alexis tries to deal with her loss, she faces new uncertainties while dealing with the FBI, Austin's parents, and his colleagues at work. She uncovers a strange series of seemingly benign lies that forces her to wonder if she even knew Austin at all.

I usually read books during my lunch break and I found this book to be quite disgusting and off putting. One of the characters was obsessed with rats and went into too much detail than I felt was necessary. I found the plot to be boring, slow moving, and predictable while, the characters to be very dull. This was my first book by the author and probably the last.

Book Review - The Degenerates by J. Albert Mann + Giveaway

People who attend the Massachusetts School for the Feeble-Minded knows it is a place where no one wants to be.  The young women who live there certainly don't want to be there. Maxine has to protect her younger sister Rose from mean attendants and older girls who like to bully the weak. Alice has to fend for herself after her brother couldn't support her because of her club foot. London was dragged to the school after one unexpected moment in her life. Each of the four girls is determined to change their fate, no matter what happens to them.

The novel was an interesting and unexpected read. Sometimes, it's hard to imagine that we make progress when we are now having "The first woman to do/win" or even a person of color to be the first. After reading this novel, I am truly glad I was born in this era, otherwise, I would surely have been deemed a moron, imbecile or idiot. It's hard to imagine what these people suffered through just because they were labeled as "different".  However, there were a few things I didn't like about the book. I wasn't fond of those endings where the reader gets to decide what happens to the characters. I wanted to know what happened to them. I wish there were more details on London's foster guardian and I wanted to know what happened to her.

The Degenerates

by J. Albert Mann
Publisher: Atheneum Books for Young Readers
Release Date: March 17th 2020
Genre: Young Adult, Historical Fiction

Synopsis:
In the tradition of Girl, Interrupted, this fiery historical novel follows four young women in the early 20th century whose lives intersect when they are locked up by a world that took the poor, the disabled, the marginalized—and institutionalized them for life.
The Massachusetts School for the Feeble-Minded is not a happy place. The young women who are already there certainly don’t think so. Not Maxine, who is doing everything she can to protect her younger sister Rose in an institution where vicious attendants and bullying older girls treat them as the morons, imbeciles, and idiots the doctors have deemed them to be. Not Alice, either, who was left there when her brother couldn’t bring himself to support a sister with a club foot. And not London, who has just been dragged there from the best foster situation she’s ever had, thanks to one unexpected, life altering moment. Each girl is determined to change her fate, no matter what it takes.

Book Review - City of Beasts by Corrie Wang + Giveaway

Seventeen years ago, the fees separated themselves from the beasts. The divisions of the genders have allowed them to keep the world peaceful.  Glori Rhodes is like most fees her age. She likes her neighborhood, can bench press her body weight and knows twenty-seven beast counterattack moves. Like many other fees, she never questioned why the genders are separated or the laws that govern them. However, when her mother secretly gives birth to a baby beast, Glori can't help but grow attached to the child.

When her brother, Twofer was snatched during a raid with the beast, Glori is willing to stop at nothing to save him. Glori and her best friend, Su, decide to infiltrate the City of Beasts to get her brother back. Glori thought it would be a simple grab and go mission but, quickly discovers that she is in for an adventure of a lifetime. Will Glori and Su be able to save her brother?

At first, I wasn't sure what to expect from the novel but, it turned out to be an interesting read. I like how it showed how things could have turned out if genders lived segregated lives. My favorite character was Twofer and how the bonds of love and family can change what society dictates to us. Overall, I thought the novel was enjoyable to read but, was predictable.

"If you see a beast, and you have the shot, don't hesitate. Kill it."

For seventeen years, fees have lived separate from beasts. The division of the sexes has kept their world peaceful. Glori Rhodes is like most other fees her age. She adores her neighborhood's abandoned Costco, can bench her body weight, and she knew twenty-seven beast counter attack moves by the time she was seven. She has never questioned the separation of the sexes or the rules that keep her post-nuclear hometown safe. But when her mother secretly gives birth to a baby beast, Glori grows to love the child and can't help wondering: What really is the difference between us and them?

When her brother, at the age of five, is snatched in a vicious raid, Glori and her best friend, Su, do the unthinkable - covertly infiltrate the City of Beasts to get him back. What's meant to be a smash-and-grab job quickly becomes the adventure of a lifetime as the fees team up with a fast-talking, T-shirt cannon wielding beast named Sway, and Glori starts to see that there's more to males, and her own history, than she's been taught. Glori, Sway, and a motley cohort of friends will go to the ends of the earth to find her little brother. And maybe save their divided world while they're at it.

About Corrie:

Corrie Wang is passionate about libraries, recycling, and eating all the food, everywhere. Corrie grew up in Buffalo but spent her formative years in Brooklyn, where one of her last paying gigs was managing a three-story nightclub on the Lower East Side.

Writing to fix things that make her angry and explore things that frighten her, Corrie’s novels are about girls unapologetically conquering scenarios they should have little control over. Tired of seeing women and girls lose in this culture - spoiler - they never do in her stories.

Her debut novel, The Takedown was chosen as one of the best books of 2017 by the New York Public Library and a 2018 YALSA selection for Best Fiction for Young Adults. City of Beasts is her second novel.

Seeing, as Corrie wrote an entire novel about the freakiness and perils of socializing too much on the internets her existence there is haphazard at best. Now, more than ever, she feels it is time for everyone to look up. (Also stand up, step up, and eat up.
Woot!) That being said, you may follow her poor photography skillz on INSTAGRAM.
AND P.S. Wang rhymes with 'song' y'all.
