Book Review - Harry Houdini (The First Names Series) by Kjartan Poskitt

 

Harry Houdini is probably the most well known magician in the world. Harry Houdini was actually born Ehrich Weisz and he was an Hungarian-born immigrant. He began performing stage tricks so, he can bring in extra cash for his family. He started off doing card tricks and gradually started doing escape acts. Harry became well-known for his death-defying escape acts. 

He was known to undergo daring feats, such as, being buried alive, being locked in a crate that was thrown into a river, and escaping from a milk can. Harry was able to captivate the audience's interest while entertaining them with magic. 

The children's book comes illustrated and goes into detail about Harry's life. The book provided in-depth facts and stories about Harry along with tidbits on how the tracks were performed. The back of the book included a glossary, timeline, and an index. One thing to note, unlike other biographies about Harry, this one doesn't include the story of his death. Overall, a good read for the kids and fans of Harry.

 

Book Review - The Haunting of Ashburn House by Darcy Coates

 

 

 In the small town of Ipson, everyone knows about the Ashburn House. There are rumors that the old owner, Edith went mad and that the house is haunted by ghosts. The ghost stories hint at a cruel supernatural being that dwells near the house. When Edith dies, Adrienne inherited the house. She is beyond ecstatic at her good fortune as she is in dire need of a new home. She has no money and has nowhere to go. Adrienne looks at the house as a chance to start over.

Adrienne notices that there are strange messages scratched into the walls. When she leaves a room, the furniture moves around. And when the night falls, something is lurking in the darkness. When exploring the area around the house, Adrienne finds a grave in the forest. The grave has a vague headstone but, it hints at a dark secret. As Adrienne tries to unravel the mystery behind the grave, she discovers that something is hunting her and it won't stop until it gets its prey.

 This was my first novel by the author and now I am hooked! The story was suspenseful and an entertaining read. I did feel that the novel progressed very slowly with many frivolous details. The story had a few predictable elements along with a few twists. I enjoyed reading the parts with her cat, Wolfgang.

Book Review - South of the Buttonwood Tree by Heather Webber + Giveaway

With the appearance of the baby, both Blue's and Sarah Grace's lives will change forever. Together they will have to learn to fight for what they want in life and who they love. As they begin to live their true selves, they discover secrets that might reveal who they are.

Oh, this book was such a joy to read! The characters were all well developed and I couldn't wait to see if they got their happy ending. I also like that the romance in the novel didn't have a lot of childish back and forth but, characters who display their true feeling. The book was such an emotional rollercoaster, you can feel each of the characters' pain and joy. I can't wait to read other books by the author.

Book Review - The Archer at Dawn by Swati Teerdhala + Giveaway

Kunal and Esha are working together as rebels on a rescue mission to take back what's theirs. They attend the upcoming Sun Mela to infiltrate Vardaan's court. Kunal pretends to be a dedicated soldier to protect the king. Esha becomes an adviser to Prince Harun and uses her cover to seek allies for their cause. Together Esha and Kunal will try to rescue the lost princess Reha. However, as the Sun Mela begins, secrets and a dangerous force are waiting for them. It causes them to doubt their loyalties to each other and their cause. Will Esha and Kunal be able to succeed in their mission?

I enjoyed reading the second novel as we get a more in-depth view of each character. We see Kunal struggle between his loyalties to the rebels, his solider friends, and to the family, he never knew he had. We see Esha as a complicated woman who wants to avenge her family but, she is sacrificing herself to her old promise. In this book, Kunal and Esha's romantic relationship isn't on display as much as the first book. This book mostly focused on the other characters which I enjoyed. I felt like this book did move a bit slow because I couldn't wait to see what happens but, the ending made it worth it. I can't wait to read the final book!

Boscia Matcha Magic Super - Antioxidant Mask

I love using a mask on my face while soaking in the tub. I heard good things about matcha in skincare and decided to try this mask. The antioxidant mask is enriched with matcha green tea extracts,  bakuchiol, jojoba, willowherb, and willow bark extract. The mask went on smoothly and after washing off, my skin did feel tight the first few uses but, it was still glowy.  After applying lotion, my skin looked and felt radiant. It was almost like I went to get a facial.

Book Review - Dark Ink by Gary Kemble

Journalist Harry Hendrick investigates sordid political corruption. He is intrigued to get to the bottom of it when he hears chilling rumors. Mistress Hel is intent on getting revenge. She uses dark arts to get her revenge from past wrongs.

Harry is asked to investigate a string of murders and deaths. The cause of each death hints to supernatural reasons. As Harry digs deeper into the deaths, he realizes that he is caught inside a deadly web. Can he stop Mistress Hel before it's too late?

When I picked up this novel, I didn't realize it was the second book in the series. The novel could be read as a standalone but, I felt like I was missing some backstory on Harry. I liked the creepy atmosphere of the novel and the supernatural theme. However, I can't say that I am a fan of Harry's. I felt like he spent a lot of time trying to focus his desires than actually doing any investigating work. I finished the novel as it was a quick read but, I don't see myself reading more books in this series.

Book Review - Watch Hollow: The Alchemist's Shadow by Gregory Funaro

After defeating the evil Garr, Lucy and Oliver have inherited the home of their dreams. The Blackford House is at peace now that the vicious tree monster is dead and the enchanted woods have returned to its original size. The Blackford home is still filled with new adventures especially when the Tinkers receive new visitors. 

A governess arrives from England with twins in her care. Algernon and Agatha are supposedly heirs to the house and have a rightful claim to the house. Upon the arrival of the Kojimas twins and their governess, a new force of evil enter the house and places a curse. The house trying to defend itself becomes a labyrinth. The two sets of siblings will need to join forces along with their magical clock animal friends to defeat their new evil foe before it destroys their home.

The second book in the series was just as fun to read as the first one. It was packed with humor, suspense, and thrills. Some of the mystery portions were predictable but, still exciting to read. If you liked this first book in the series, this second book will not disappoint.

Book Review - The Killing Fog (The Grave Kingdom, #1) by Jeff Wheeler + Giveaway

Bingmei becomes an orphan after she watched her family being murdered in front of her. She becomes the sole member of a once-thriving combat school. Bingmei joins a band of mercenaries that work for a local king to search for magical relics. Their recent assignment for Bingmei and her team is to travel to the wilderness to retrieve treasures from an ancient palace that is buried under a glacier valley. As the adventurers dwell deeper into the palace, they realize that trespassing the vault might come with deadly consequences.

The emperor of the Grave Kingdom and ruler of darkness has been lying in slumber waiting for the phoenix. Now that Bingmei and her friends awakened him, they are afraid of the legendary prophecy that is about to unfold.  Bingmei is thrust into the role of being a savior and it's a role that she isn't prepared for or wants. But as the fate of her friends and the world lies in her hands, will she be able to stop the prophecy?

The novel had generous world-building details that informed but, didn't overwhelmed the reader. I did wish that them unleashing the curse happened sooner and the novel didn't leave off in a cliffhanger. As this is the first novel in the series, I hope we don't find out until the last book whether or not the main character succeeds in defeating the emperor.  I did like the bond between one of the characters but, I am torn on the main character. She is portrayed as a strong fearless leader but, when we learn about her true feelings, I feel conflicted. Overall, the book is an interesting read and I look forward to seeing how the series ends.

Book Review - Watch Hollow by Gregory Funaro + Giveaway

In the town of Watch Hollow lies an enchanted woods that surround a now neglected Blackford House. The once-grand house holds many secrets, including magical ones such as, a giant cuckoo clock that powers the entire house. However, when the clock's gears stop turning, an evil presence from the woods starts to emerge and descends on the house.

Lucy and Oliver Tinker arrive with their father to help fix the broken clock. A stranger with a bundle of gold coins made an offer to their father that he couldn't refuse. Mr. Tinker will need to fix the clock at Blackford House and he will be able to keep the gold coins. It didn't take long before Lucy and Oliver to realize there is more to the Blackford House than meets the eye. Together with a few magical animals, the siblings must join forces to defeat the evil presence.

The novel was a fun and engaging read. I love how the author spun a tale of magical creatures and devotion to family. I enjoyed the smooth writing style that kept me hooked and wanted me to read more about the siblings. The magical story about the house had enough details to make the readers interested but, still wanting to know more. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

Gregory Funaro grew up in Cranston, Rhode Island, and wrote his first story, The Ghost in the Window, in the fourth grade. He considers this to be his finest work, but unfortunately it has been lost to time. His first book for Disney-Hyperion, ALISTAIR GRIM'S ODDITORIUM (2015), was a New York Times best seller and an Amazon Best Book of the Month. His other works for children have received starred reviews from Kirkus, School Library Journal, and ALA Booklist. Check out WATCH HOLLOW, the first book in his series for HarperCollins, as well as its sequel, THE ALCHEMIST'S SHADOW, coming in 2020. Greg also teaches drama at East Carolina University, and is busy working on his next novel.
