Book Review - The Other Woman by Sandie Jones

Emily found the perfect guy. He has a good job, friends, and a supportive family. She feels a spark with Adam, that she never felt before with anyone else. Emily immediately is attached to Adam and falls head over heels in love with him. However, when she meets Adam's beloved mother, Pammie, something isn't quite right. Mothers and sons have always had a tight bond but Pammie is willing to push boundaries to prevent Emily from being with Adam. How far is Pammie willing to go? 

I picked this book as I been in a similar situation before. I found myself mentally yelling at Emily, who was a strong woman before being torn down into mush. However, I know the appeal of saying, "I am married/dating this person and not their family". But,  as the author accurately details, it comes at a cost of mental and physical distress. Even, so far, as altering a person's character. I enjoyed the story, but while, I saw the ending coming, some parts of the novel left me a bit confused. For example,  people knew that someone was doing something bad but, instead of telling someone, they tried brushing it under the rug. Overall, it was a thrilling and interesting read. I look forward to reading more of the author's work.

Book Review - Captain Superlative by J. S. Puller + Giveaway

Janey Silverman is used to being ignored and treated like she doesn't exist. But when a student dons a blue wig, red mask, and silver swimsuit to impart a kindness on citizens, Janey is both in awe and confused by the masked hero, Captain Superlative. She is used to being in the shadows, but when she is accidentally pulled into the spotlight, Janey is unsure how to react. When Janey starts a friendship with the budding superhero, she is pulled out from her comfort zone. She starts to define who she wants to be in life. However, her newfound friendship causes Janey to be a target of the school's bully, Dagmar. When Janey discovers her superhero's dark secret, she questions their mission and their friendship. Will Janey and Captain Superlative be able to stay friends or will the secret tear them apart?

The novel was an emotional and wonderful read. While Captain Superlative's dark secret was a bit predictable, it was done with an emotional pull that made readers bond with the characters. The story showed readers a different way people can deal with tragedy along with delicate nature of friendships.  The novel shows how people have the power to chose their own destiny instead of having one specific trait define them. I found the novel to be an inspiring read with a satisfying ending.

Book Review - His Risk (The Amish of Hart County #4) by Shelley Shepard Gray

Calvin Fisher left his Amish community at the tender age of fourteen after having a problematic relationship with his family. Calvin only returned to Hart County because his beloved brother, Mark has fallen ill. As Calvin works to make amends for his troubled past and questionable job, he crosses path with a sheltered local nursery school teacher, Alice Yoder. Alice is wary of Calvin because of his questionable past, but she can't help feeling an attraction to him. Although Calvin assures Alice that he is worthy of her friendship, she can't help to feel conflicted. Will Calvin be able to tell his family why he is working in a gang? Will Alice be able to trust Calvin only has her best interest at heart?

I have read a few of Gray's books and loved each novel because each one had a surprise element. However, I felt like this novel fell short and lacked excitement. The person who causing all of the trouble was very obvious even though there were two people of interest. I did like how Gray humanized and showed each characters' struggling between doing what is right and following their hearts. Fans of Gray's work would be happy to know this novel has recurring characters.
