Book Review - Fox Creek (Cork O’Connor #19) by William Kent Krueger

 

Henry Meloux is an old Ojibwe healer and he has recently been having visions of his death. He walks the Northwoods in solitude to prepare himself for the end of his long life.  However, he doesn't know if his vision are tied to the hunters who are seeking a woman named Dolores Morriseau. Dolores is a stranger who came to seek guidance and shelter from Henry about her marriage.

Henry, Dolores, and his great niece, Rainy, must escape deep into the Boundary Waters to escape the deadly mercenaries. Henry knows that they will stop at nothing to get what they want but, he fears that this might be his last journey on his beloved land.

Cork is trying to identify the hunters and why they are pursuing Dolores. Cork begins tracking the hunters when he fears that they might harm Rainy, his wife, and Henry. As he tracks the hunters in the wilderness, Cork gets hit with a late season snowstorm. He fears with each passing minute, time is running out for his people.

This is book is a part of a series but, I was able to read it as a standalone and follow along. I thought the book started off as good but, got slow towards the middle and started picking up again towards the end. The book was straightforward and didn't really have any twists or unexpected turns.  I felt like the book was an easy and straightforward read.

Book Review - The Healing of Natalie Curtis by Jane Kirkpatrick

 

 

Natalie Curtis is a classically trained pianist and singer who has isolated herself for five years after having a breakdown before her debut with the New York Philharmonic.Natalie is filled with guilt and feels that she can't reclaim the joy of music. In 1902, her brother, George returns home and invites her to join him in the West to help her heal. In the West, she is able to find her love of music through the stories, songs, and rhythms of the Native Americans.

As Natalie finds herself entranced by their music, she is discouraged to learn that the US government has laws in place to erase the Native American's culture. The Code of Offenses prohibits them from singing, dancing, and even speaking their own language as it will help prevents them from assimilating. Natalie is determined to help document these songs and traditions to before they are erased and she appeals to President Teddy Roosevelt for help with her task.

I have read quite a few books by the author and I have mixed opinions about her novels. The author uses a true story to weave a story about a woman on a conquest to help protect the Native American's culture. I like reading about her journey but, I found the writing to be dull and boring. I didn't like the writing style and it felt like I was reading a textbook. The writing style made it hard to feel connected to Natalie. I found the book to be very slow and dull for my liking. I appreciate the author's efforts to educate readers on this remarkable woman and her cause but, I didn't like the execution.

Book Review - The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones

The novel follows four Native American men after a dark event from their childhood. An entity is bent on getting revenge because of the incident causing the men to struggle and worry about their lives. The four friends are not involved in following their culture and traditions causing them to be placed in the entity's crosshairs.

I love horror novels and I was looking forward to reading this. Unfortunately, I just couldn't finish reading it. I finished more than 90% of the book but, I just honestly couldn't be bothered anymore. I found the writing style hard to follow and I had to reread the same sentences multiple times and it still didn't make sense. I found the story to be very slow and I can't say I liked any of the main characters.
