Book Review - Right After the Weather by Carol Anshaw

Cate is a set designer in her early forties. She lives and works in Chicago's theater community. She know she has to grow up and stop taking handouts from her parents. She has a plan in place to fix her financial problems and settle in a serious relationship.

She started a relationship even though she still coming to terms with an old affair that went nowhere. Her ex-husband is currently living with her in her spare bedroom after being kicked out of his house. He spends most of the day searching and reading about online conspiracy theories. Cate sees him spiral out of control but, she is unsure of how to help him. Her best friend, Neale, a yoga instructor who lives nearby with her son. Cate feels that Neale is the ideal model for what being a grownup should look like.

A few blocks away lives Nathan and Irene who are small time criminals and drug addicts. Their worlds collide when Cate sees them assaulting Neale in her kitchen. Cate has to think fast to take action to save her friend. Cate's world changes overnight when she comes to term with the violence she's capable of.

I originally picked up this book because I thought the cover looked interesting. However, I feel like the book was very boring and just dragged along. I felt like I read more than half of the book and it went nowhere. I didn't like any of the characters and found the main character to be annoying.  I had to recheck the synopsis of the book because the assault doesn't take place until more than halfway of the book.

Book Review - The Paris Betrayal by James R. Hannibal

Company spy Ben Calix had a mission go wrong in Rome and when he returns to Paris, he finds his entire world turned upside down. He was targeted in an ambush and a sniper is after him. He tries to get in contact with his agency and was told that they are severing their ties with him and French SWAT is after him.

Ben is desperate for answers and he is trying to avoid a biochemical attack from happening. As he tries to escape, he unwittingly causes another civilian to end up in the Company's cross hairs. He decides to travel across Europe to connect with former team members to help him stop the attack. While Ben is looking for a plan, he will also deal with the fallout from being kicked out of the Company.

I thought the novel was a quick and fast paced read. I can't say that I care for any of the characters or what happened to them because there were a lot of characters involved. I felt that the novel was a bit too predictable and I was able to guess all the twists before they were disclosed. The book was an okay read and I would be open to reading other books by the author.

Book Review - We Thought We Knew You by M. William Phelps

It was July 2015 and it was an ordinary day for Mary Yoder and her husband, Bill. Mary had returned home from their chiropractic center and was felling unwell. Mary was known for being very health-conscious but, today she was suddenly unwell with bouts of vomiting and sweating along with feeling very weak.

Bill took Mary to the ER to help diagnose her illness. However, the doctors in the ER and ICU were baffled by the cause of her rapidly progressing illness. Bill and their children gathered around Mary in shock as they say goodbye to their beloved mother.

In the weeks after Mary's sudden death, the family received startling news from the medical examiner that Mary was deliberately poisoned. They found trace amounts of colchicine, which is a lethal substance that is very toxic if it isn't used as prescribed. The chemical is typically used to treat gout and Mary doesn't have gout.  The case takes a strange turn when the local police department receives an anonymous letter that claims Adam Yoder had poisoned his mother.

Kaitlyn Conley is Adam's ex-girlfriend and she works at the Yoders' clinic. Katie is pretty and popular but, some people speak of her ability to lie and manipulate people for her own benefit. She has been known to exhibit behaviors fueled by rage because someone had rejected her. Katie had spent time by Mary's bedside during the last few hours of Mary's life.

This was my second true crime novel and it was an interesting read. I liked that the author include the backstory and the trial proceedings. I wasn't fond of the layout of the book. I felt that some of the same information was being told multiple times and it felt like the author was jumping around a few times. However, the author  did a good job showing the compelling evidence of the murder of Mary along with showcasing Mary as beacon of the community.

Book Review - All This Time by Mikki Daughtry + Giveaway

Kyle and Kimberly were the perfect couple in high school. He is on the football team and she is a cheerleader. However, when Kimberly breaks up with him on the night of their graduation party, Kyle's life changes forever. Their car crashes and Kyle suffers a brain injury. He finds out that Kimberly is dead. He is unable to cope with his grief and hopes to find someone who can understand his pain.

When he meets Marley, he finds someone who understands him. Marley is dealing with her grief from losing her twin sister. She thinks it's her fault that her sister died. When Marley and Kyle hang out, Kyle feels that he found a kindred spirit.

Together they work to heal each other's pain. They realize that they falling in love with each other. However, Kyle can't help feel that he is heading towards another disaster after he finally got his life back together.

I had mixed feelings about this novel. I found it to be an emotional read but, I was conflicted about some parts of the novel. I felt like Kyle left one "bad" relationship and traded it for another. I felt like he did learn and grow himself but, Marley wasn't able to do that herself. I felt like their relationship was co-dependent on each other for their happiness. I can't say I liked Marley and some of Kyle's behavior. I found that parts of the novel were over-the-top and not believable. I am on the fence on reading other books by the author.
