Book Review - With Every Memory by Janine Rosche

With Every Memory by Janine Rosche is about a woman, Lori Mendenhall, who tries to pick up the pieces of her life after a devastating accident that killed her teenage son, Austin. A year after Lori’s family was in a car accident, she is able to return back home to her family after her recovery and awakening from a coma. Lori is still recovering from a traumatic brain injury that has left her unable to remember the last eight years of her life.

Her family is still reeling from Austin’s death but as Lori tries to heal, she realizes and is shocked that her family and life before the accident is unrecognizable. Her doting husband, Michael, is distant and spends most of his time at work. He seems hesitant when she asks for details about their past. Lori feels that he is hiding something from her and doesn’t know if she can trust him. Avery, Austin’s twin sister, was once bubbly and the center of attention. She now spends most of her time locked up in her room listening to music and avoids socializing and school. Lori feels that someone is keeping a secret and with every returning memory, she wonders if the life she can’t remember is actually one she wants to forget.

Avery feels that her life is different since she lost her beloved brother. She has spent the last year in limbo but after she was told she might not graduate high school, she will decide how she wants to spend the rest of her life. If she wants to have a chance at graduating, she would need to accept help from her brother’s best friend, Xander Dixon. When the trio were young, Xander would pick and tease her relentlessly. Avery feels isolated and she doesn’t know if she will be able to put her and Xander’s past behind her and ask for his help.

The novel was told from Avery’s and Lori’s point of view. Even though the two characters were very different, they both had similar struggles. Avery is trying to move forward and figure out her life without her twin by her side. She has spent most of her life with him and there is no one else who had her back like he did. Lori is trying to figure out what has happened in the past 8 years that has caused a strain in her marriage and how to move forward. Usually, with novels that had dual point of views, I am usually invested in one storyline over the other but both were equally captivating to read.

It was heartwarming to read how the once close knit family is working to bridge the distance that was caused by the accident. Avery is learning that she can be her own independent person apart from her twin and is rediscovering her joy in fashion. Lori is trying to rekindle the love she had for her husband while following her passion for interior design. As readers we can feel that the family loves each other and Austin, and they are trying to carve a path forward without Austin.

The story had a few unpredictable twists that were interesting and helped lead to a satisfying conclusion for the Mendenhall family.  The novel illustrates that grief can rip a family apart but it can also help them heal and be a better version of themselves. If you love stories about redemption, family bonds, and fighting for the ones you love, then you will enjoy this heartwarming read.

Book Review - At Home on Marigold Lane by Debbie Mason

At Home on Marigold Lane by Debbie Mason is about a young woman returning home to recuperate after a serious injury and a failed marriage. To add insult to injury, she then runs into the man that broke her heart years ago. Brianna MacLeod is a Family and Marriage Therapist and she feels embarrassed that she has to return home to Highland Falls after her marriage had imploded.

Bri is ashamed that she missed the red flags in her abusive relationship and feels that she isn’t qualified to be a therapist anymore. However, she loves helping others and it is second nature to her. When Bri gives up being a therapist she feels that she lost her purpose in life and she is giving up something she loves. Bri decides to move out of the inn she shares with her sister and grandfather to live by herself. Unfortunately, her plan is dashed when she finds out that she has a roommate and it’s someone she would never expect to see again.

Bri and her roommate concoct a plan to keep Bri’s sister from worrying about her. In the process of creating the plan, Bri ends up counseling her roommate and her neighbors. She didn’t expect that it would lead to her reconnecting with her first love.

Caleb Scott feels that his failed marriage to Raine is tough on his stepdaughter, Izzy. He feels that Izzy needs someone to talk to and work through her emotions with. However, he wasn’t expecting that person to be Bri. Caleb thought his feelings for her were gone when she broke his heart years ago but he finds himself falling for her. Unlike his marriage to Raine, being with Bri feels like home and comfortable. The only problem Caleb has is trying to convince Bri that their relationship deserves a second chance.

The novel is the fifth book in the series and it can be read as a standalone. However, I felt that there were some character nuances and storylines that were referenced that went over my head because I didn’t read the previous books. I felt that the novel started out strong and then slowly fizzled out because they were parts of the story that were connected to the previous books. The book also had a lot of characters that were mentioned once or twice in the beginning and then they would make another appearance later in the book. It was hard keeping track of these minor characters and how they related to the story.

The book was filled with characters who were trying to find their own paths to happiness but they could be annoying. I enjoyed reading about most of the characters but I found Raine to be very annoying. There were points in the story when she garnered some unwarranted sympathy and seemed selfless such as with her drive to build a new trauma center. However, there were many points in the story that Raine would stop at nothing to get what she wants even if it means throwing other people into the fire.

Then we have two characters who seem to have something going on between them but nothing is disclosed or goes further with their chemistry. I felt that this side story did not add to the main plot and detracted from the story. I didn’t care for Caleb’s best friend, Josh. Josh seems to support Caleb but Josh never seems to be able to keep his mouth shut or read the room. Josh knows Caleb is trying to keep a secret from the town but yet Josh manages to tell everyone the secret within a few minutes of meeting the person. He then always wants to know the story but then can never keep it to himself. I am not even sure why they keep telling Josh anything since he can’t keep a secret to save himself.

My other annoyance is with Caleb and Bri. They know they should be keeping their relationship a secret but yet they can never seem to keep their hands off each other in public. Instead of limiting their physical embraces in public, they go at each other like teenagers as if they want to be caught. And they kept getting caught on multiple occasions but they continued acting like lovers in public. I felt like this type of behavior was unrealistic and the continuous references to previous storylines prevented me from completely enjoying and immersing myself in the book.

Book Review - You Will Remember Me by Hannah Mary McKinnon

When he wakes up, he is on a deserted beach in Maryland wearing only swim trunks and his head covered in bruises. He can't remember who he is or why he is in Maryland. All of his memories are fuzzy and he has no idea where to go. He has a faint idea that Maine is his hometown and returning might help uncover some more answers. Instead, when he arrives he feels like he has more questions than answers.

Lily Reid thinks she knows her boyfriend, Jack until he goes missing one night. During her frantic search she uncovers secrets that he has been keeping from her. Lily fears that Jack is hiding a dark past and he is purposely keeping her in the dark.

Maya Scott is desperate to find her estrange stepbrother, Asher, since he has disappeared without a trace. She is grateful that he is back even though, he has trouble remembering her.  She is worried that he will remember their mutual history and the secrets that bond them.

The book was a disappointing read. I was able to guess most of the story but, the ending did have a twist. Personally, I don't think it was worth reading to the end because it took forever to get there. I am not sure I would go out of my way to read anything by this author again because this book was a huge disappointment and waste of time.

Book Review - We Are the Brennans by Tracey Lange

Sunday Brennan wakes up in a Los Angeles hospital covered in bruises after being in a drunk driving accident. She realizes she will have to swallow her pride and go home to her family in New York. She is afraid to go home after abandoning her family and her high school sweetheart five years ago without any explanations.

Sunday wants to make amends and rebuild her life even if it means dealing with her resentful brothers and ex-fiancĂ©. She starts to realize that they might need her as much as she needs them.  However, a dangerous man from her past is out to destroy their family business and their family. Sunday realizes that the only way to save the family from financial ruin is to tell her family her secrets. As Sunday tries to come to terms with her past, she realizes she isn't the only hiding something.

I picked this book because of the beautiful cover. However, I should know better than to do that by now because this book was super boring. The plot barely moved along and the big reveal was predictable. I thought the reason for Sunday leaving to be silly and found it hard that she didn't talk to her boyfriend before leaving since they had an unbreakable bond. If you like cozy romantic reads, you will enjoy this book.

Book Review - The Rumor by Lesley Kara

There is a rumor circulating in the small seaside town Joanna lives in. The rumor is that a notorious child killer is living a new life under an assumed identity. The person who committed the crime was a young child herself. Joanna starts to suspect everyone in town.

As Joanna starts to read more about the case, she becomes obsessed with finding out the truth. However, while she is searching for the killer, she puts her and her family in the killer's crosshairs. The person is ready to kill again to protect what they love. Joanna realizes how far someone is willing to go for people they love.

The novel was an interesting read. The twist was a surprise for me but, might have been predictable to some. The novel moved a bit slow at times and had a lot of characters. I must admit, I didn't like the scenes with the killer's point of view. When the person was exposed, I felt like their inner thoughts didn't match the person we knew.

Book Review - Never Have I Ever by Joshilyn Jackson

Amy Whey is happy with her easy going life and the simple things that come with it. She enjoys teaching people how to dive, helping her best friend, Charlotte, run a local book club, and even baking cookies for her neighbors. She adores her family. She has a husband who is a professor, a fifteen year stepdaughter, and an infant son. She lives near her most trusted and reliable friend, Charlotte. However, Amy's perfect life might unravel when a new neighbor, Angelica Roux, arrives on her doorstep.

Roux has a magnetic charm that cause all the neighbor women to surround her. She plies the woman with wine to lure them into a game of spilling secrets to each other. They all think its a game for fun but Amy knows that Roux is up to something.  Roux seems to know a secret that Amy has kept buried in her past.

Roux has a proposition for Amy. She wants Amy to pay her to keep her mouth shut, otherwise, Roux will make Amy pay for her sins. Amy is desperate to keep her secret safe and she is willing to do anything. She decides that the best thing she can do is to beat Roux at her own game.

This book was recommended by someone in my book club. I was excited to read it but, I quickly realized this may not be the book for me. The book starts off okay but, then quickly dissolved into a hot mess. I didn't really care for any of the characters as some of them felt over the top. I had hard time believing Roux and the plot even felt far-fetched. I felt like a few times Amy could have ended this whole cat and mouse thing sooner. The book did have a few surprise twists but, I am not even sure they were worth it.

Book Review - Behind Every Lie by Christina McDonald

Eva Hansen wakes up in a hospital after being hit by lightning. She discovers her mother, Kat, has been murdered. The police found Eva unconscious a few blocks away from her mother. Eva has no recollection of the events from that night. However, the police are suspicious of her and think she is hiding something.

Eva is determined to discover the truth behind that night. She heads to Kat's former home, London to find answers. As she tries to unravel all the secrets her mother kept, she realizes someone is trying to keep the past buried. She is doesn't know who to trust.

The story is told from alternating perspective of Eva and Kat. I enjoyed reading how Eva was trying to piece together her memory from the night. Although there were moments that I found myself rolling my eyes at some portions of the story.  I did find portions of the book to be predictable but, thought the book was an enjoyable read overall.

Book Review - The Other People by C.J. Tudor

Gabe is driving home one night and he is stuck behind a rusty old car. As he stares ahead willing traffic to move faster, he sees a little girl's face appear in the car's rear window. The girl mouths "daddy" to him. He realizes it's his five-year-old daughter, Izzy. After their faithful momentary meeting, Gabe never sees his daughter again.

Three years later, Gabe spends his days and night going up and down the highway searching for his daughter. He refuses to give up hope because that would mean admitting that his daughter is dead. He receives help from an unlikely ally and discovers the car he last saw his daughter in. The car was found abandoned with a body inside. Gabe must come to terms with the day Izzy disappeared and his past.

Fran and her daughter, Alice also spends a lot of time on the road. Unlike Gabe, they are running from people who want to hurt them. It's because Fran knows the truth behind Izzy's disappearance. She knows that if they catch her, they might not make it out alive.

I thought the novel was an interesting read. I wish the author gave more details about certain things and characters. I didn't really care for some of the supernatural bits of the story. While the story took a bit to get going, I found the book to be an enjoyable read.

Book Review - Everything I Thought I Knew by Shannon Takaoka + Giveaway

Chloe is a seventeen-year-old who had her entire life planned out. She was going to work hard and get into a good college. However, during a cross-country meet, she passes out and wakes up in the emergency room. She is told that she needs a new heart and all the plans she made goes out of the window. Fast forward eight months after the surgery, everything in Chloe's life has changed. She now has to attend summer school with underachievers. All she wants to do is grab her surfboard and surf which is weird because she had no interest in surfing before. As a bonus, Kai, her instructor is cute and caring.

Chloe keeps having a strange and vivid recurring nightmare of her crashing a motorcycling and dying. She is also seeing people and places that she doesn't know but, recognizes. She also has memories that she doesn't remember experiencing. As she searches for answers, she finds herself drawn to Kai and she starts to question everything she thought she knew.

I thought the novel was an interesting read. I wasn't expecting the novel to have a sci-fi twist. While I enjoyed the story, I wasn't a fan of the characters. I found their behavior annoying and ungrateful. Some parts of the book were a bit slow but, overall it was a good read.

A teenage girl wonders if she’s inherited more than just a heart from her donor in this compulsively readable debut.

Seventeen-year-old Chloe had a plan: work hard, get good grades, and attend a top-tier college. But after she collapses during cross-country practice and is told that she needs a new heart, all her careful preparations are laid to waste.

Eight months after her transplant, everything is different. Stuck in summer school with the underachievers, all she wants to do now is grab her surfboard and hit the waves—which is strange, because she wasn’t interested in surfing before her transplant. (It doesn’t hurt that her instructor, Kai, is seriously good-looking.)

And that’s not all that’s strange. There’s also the vivid recurring nightmare about crashing a motorcycle in a tunnel and memories of people and places she doesn’t recognize.

Is there something wrong with her head now, too, or is there another explanation for what she’s experiencing?

As she searches for answers, and as her attraction to Kai intensifies, what she learns will lead her to question everything she thought she knew—about life, death, love, identity, and the true nature of reality.

Photo Content from Shannon Takaoka

Shannon Takaoka is a young adult fiction author who wrote her first book at age 12, when she blatantly ripped off C.S. Lewis with an epic fantasy inspired by THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE. (Well, maybe it wasn’t that epic — do 10 pages count?) Madeline L’Engle, Charlotte BrontĂ«, Neil Gaiman and a host of other authors inspired her lifelong love of reading, and she’s especially into all things gothic, weird and nerdy. If a story involves time travel, strange science-y stuff or alternate realities, she’s in.

Originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Shannon now lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband, two children and one very needy dog, who is probably leaning on her right now as she’s pecking away on her keyboard. Her debut novel, EVERYTHING I THOUGHT I KNEW, about a 17-year-old girl questioning everything about who she is and who she wants to be following a heart transplant, will be published by Candlewick Press on 10/13/2020 and Walker UK in 2021. She promises that it’s a little weird — but in a good way.

Book Review - All This Time by Mikki Daughtry + Giveaway

Kyle and Kimberly were the perfect couple in high school. He is on the football team and she is a cheerleader. However, when Kimberly breaks up with him on the night of their graduation party, Kyle's life changes forever. Their car crashes and Kyle suffers a brain injury. He finds out that Kimberly is dead. He is unable to cope with his grief and hopes to find someone who can understand his pain.

When he meets Marley, he finds someone who understands him. Marley is dealing with her grief from losing her twin sister. She thinks it's her fault that her sister died. When Marley and Kyle hang out, Kyle feels that he found a kindred spirit.

Together they work to heal each other's pain. They realize that they falling in love with each other. However, Kyle can't help feel that he is heading towards another disaster after he finally got his life back together.

I had mixed feelings about this novel. I found it to be an emotional read but, I was conflicted about some parts of the novel. I felt like Kyle left one "bad" relationship and traded it for another. I felt like he did learn and grow himself but, Marley wasn't able to do that herself. I felt like their relationship was co-dependent on each other for their happiness. I can't say I liked Marley and some of Kyle's behavior. I found that parts of the novel were over-the-top and not believable. I am on the fence on reading other books by the author.
