Book Review - The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune

At forty years old, Linus Baker leads a quiet and solitary life. He lives in a tiny house with a mischievous cat and listens to old records. He works as a case worker for the Department in Charge Of Magical Youth. He inspects the government-sanctioned orphanages and checks on the well-being of children. Day in and day out, Linus follows the same routine and he has dreamed of visiting the ocean.

Everything changes when Linus is unexpectedly summoned by the Extremely Upper Management. He is given a highly classified assignment to travel to a remote island where six dangerous magical children reside. Linus must set aside his fears and determine if the orphanage is a safe place for the children. As Linus conducts his investigation he realizes that the children are not the only secret the island keeps.

The book was an enchanting and magical read. While I could predict most of the "secrets", the novel still kept me entertained. The characters were all well-developed and loveable. You couldn't help root for each of them. The only thing I didn't like was the epilogue seemed rushed and a bit out of place. Otherwise, if you like reading about acceptance, having a place to call home and finding yourself, then you will enjoy this book.

Book Review - The Truth About Ben and June by Alex Kiester

**May contain spoilers**

Ben and June always felt that they were destined to meet since, the moment they met in a hospital waiting room on New Year's Eve. They knew that their chance encounter and subsequent relationship was special because of all the unlikely decisions that bought them together. After a few years of marriage, June is struggling as a new mom. She wonders about the her life before the birth of her son and if she didn't give up the lead role in a famous ballet company to become a mother. June feels like she is a bad mom and feels alone when she is betrayed by someone close to her. She decides to write to her deceased mother in hopes that her mother would guide her.

One morning, Ben wakes up to the sound of his son crying. He tries to locate June but, quickly realizes June is gone along with her suitcase. Ben is desperate to find June and tries to piece together why she left. As he talks with her friends, he realizes that there were things June were keeping a secret from him.  As Ben continues to dig into June's daily life, he starts to realize that he might know his wife as well as he thought.

I thought that the book had an interesting premise and was excited to read it. The first third of the book kept me intrigued but, when the cause of her disappearance becomes clearer, I started disconnecting from the book. I thought that the cause would have been something different. Personally, I am not a mother so, I couldn't connect with June on that level and that seemed to the main driver for her wanting to disappear. I even found that the connection between June and her friends a bit trivial at times. For example, when June was so upset that she plucked bananas  from her friend's bag and dropped it on the floor. Then her friend called her a psychopath or something like that. Perhaps, as mentioned maybe I just couldn't relate to any of the characters. I believe readers who have children might be able to connect better with the characters and would find this book more enjoyable than I did.

Book Review - The Secret Mother by Shalini Boland

Tessa Markham returns to her home to find a child in her kitchen. The boy thinks that Tessa is his mother. However, doesn't have any children, at least not anymore.

Tessa contacts the police because she doesn't know the boy or how he got inside her home. However, because of her past, Tessa becomes a suspect to the kidnapping of the child. Tessa doesn't know who to believe when her husband reveals a secret of his own. Will Tessa be able to confront her painful past?

I thought the book was an okay read. I was able to guess the ending from a mile away. I felt like all the characters felt predictable and fit into their roles i.e. her boss being a source of comfort while her husband didn't believe a word she said. I also didn't really care for Tessa as a character as she was naive. There was a few times where I rolled my eyes by her actions. I definitely expected more from this book and it didn't deliver.

Book Review - Goblin Market by Diane Zahler + Giveaway

Lizzie and Minka might be sisters but, they are nothing alike. Minka is outgoing and personable while, Lizzie is shy and prefers to keep to herself. Lizzie likes that nothing ever happens in their quiet sleepy village. She likes that its safe and comfortable and she hopes nothing ever changes.

However, Lizzie's world comes crashing down when Minka meets a boy. The boy gives her a delicious plum to eat. He is charming, alluring, and handsome. He tells her that she is special and he understands her like no one else does. He tells Minka to join him in the darkness in the forest.

As Minka falls under the zdusze's (goblin) spell, Lizzie will stop at nothing to save her beloved sister. She knows that his words and fruit is poison and she is desperate to get Minka to see the truth. Will Lizzie be able to save Minka before it's too late?

I am not familiar with the poem or the Polish folklore that this book is based off of. However, I thought it was an interesting read. The book was short but, filled with world building details for young readers to enjoy. At times, the book did seem to drag a bit and had a lot of fluff material though. Overall, I found it to be an interesting read and I would read more books by the author.

**Disclosure - I received a free unedited copy of the book in exchange for an honest opinion**

One sister must save the other from a goblin prince in this rich, spooky, and delightfully dark fantasy!

"TERRIFICALLY TIMELESS. . . SPLENDID."—Shelf Awareness

Lizzie and Minka are sisters, but they’re nothing alike: Minka is outgoing and cheerful, while Lizzie is shy and sensitive. Nothing much ever happens in their sleepy village—there are fields to tend, clothes to mend, and weekly trips to the market, predictable as the turning of the seasons. Lizzie likes it that way. It’s safe. It’s comfortable. She hopes nothing will ever change.

But one day, Minka meets a boy.
A boy who gives her a plum to eat.

He is charming. He is handsome. He tells her that she’s special. He tells her no one understands her like he does—not her parents, not her friends, not even Lizzie. He tells her she should come away with him, into the darkness, into the forest. . . .

Minka has been bewitched and ensnared by a zdusze—a goblin. His plum was poison, his words are poison, and strange things begin to happen. Trees bleed, winds howl, a terrible sickness descends on Minka, and deep in the woods, in a place beyond sunshine, beyond reality, a wedding table has been laid. . . .

To save her sister, Lizzie will have to find courage she never knew she had—courage to confront the impossible—and enter into a world of dreams, danger, and death.

Rich world-building inspired by both Polish folklore and the poetry of Christina Rossetti combines with a tender sister story in this thrilling novel from Diane Zahler.

"Lush. . . Dreamy. . . Breath-quickening."—The Horn Book
"Resonates with emotion."—BCCB
"Believably wrought."—Publishers Weekly
"Will entice readers looking for some chills."—Kirkus Reviews

Book Review - Daughters Unto Devils by Amy Lukavics

Sixteen year old Amanda Verner was hoping for a fresh start. When she hears that they would be moving from their small mountain cabin to the prairie, she is excited over the opportunity. She can leave behind the past winter that has taken a toll on her mentally and physically. She had terrifying visions and she felt her sanity slipping especially when her baby sister cries nonstop.

Amanda is excited to leave behind the memory and pain of the boy she was secretly meeting in the woods and whose baby is she now carrying. However, when they arrive to their bigger home, they realize something is amiss. The inside of the house is covered in blood and Amanda is certain something isn't right. She heard stories of the land being tainted by the devil and people losing their minds and killing their families. Their only neighbor is a son and his doctor father who seem strange and they live in the woods at the edge of the prairie. Amanda isn't sure if the prairie is evil or if its just her.

The novel was a quick and creepy read. However, I was left wanting more. I felt like there was a lot of build up but the story was very lacking in details. Most of the exciting parts of the story took place towards the end and it felt rushed. It was a good attempt at a debut book but, it needs to be fleshed out more.

Book Review - The Memory Keeper's Daughter: A Novel by Kim Edwards

In a late winter night in 1964, Dr. David Henry is forced to deliver his own twins in Lexington, Kentucky. His first child, a son, is born perfectly healthy. David notices that their second child, their daughter is born with Down syndrome. He decides that he needs to protect his wife, Norah, from heartache and makes a split second decision that will alter their lives forever.

He asks his nurse, Caroline, to take the child to an institution for children like her and to keep the secret from his family.  Caroline feels conflicted on David's choice and instead, she decides to keep the child for herself.

I wanted to love this because the description and summary was so spellbinding. However, I was more than 40% into the book before I lost interest. and stopped reading. The story just plodded long with boring details and unnecessary filler. I had a hard time connecting with any of the characters and I wasn't invested in learning what happened to them. This book is a good reminder why I shouldn't pick up books by the title and cover.

Book Review - Just Like Mother by Anne Heltzel

The last time Maeve saw her beloved cousin, Andrea, was two decades ago when Maeve escaped the cult they were raised in. Maeve has worked hard to put her past life behind her and start a new life in New York City. She tries to keep everyone at arms length to prevent getting hurt again.

One day, Andrea appears in her life again. Maeve feels that she regain a part of herself that she was missing. She spends all of her free time at Andrea's remote Catskills estate. Maeve meets Andrea's wealthy work friends who disapproves of her single lifestyle. She is surprised to learn that Andrea made her fortune in the fertility industry after what happened in their past.  As Maeve spends more time with Andrea, she realizes that her cousin is trigger memories that Maeve fought hard to forget.

The only thing scary about this disappointing book is the cover. The book was boring and very predictable until the end. There wasn't a single likeable character in the entire novel. I found that ending could be seen a mile away and this book felt like torture reading until the very end.

Book Review - The Darkest Secret by Alex Marwood

Twelve years ago, three-year-old Coco goes missing during her father's fiftieth birthday celebration. She leaves behind her identical twin, Ruby as the only witness. Their father, Sean, is a wealthy and influential real estate developer and his friends gather at his seaside vacation home for a weekend of fun.Coco going missing causes a media frenzy and it changes the lives of everyone at the party forever.

Sean has passed away and everyone who was present during the night of Coco's disappearance, come to pay their respect. One thing becomes clear that the secrets of the past will be revealed as the night progresses.

I thought the book had an interesting premise but, I didn't really care for any of the adult characters. I felt like most of them were terrible people and did whatever they wanted without caring about anyone else. I felt like the book did move slowly and had a lot of unnecessary details but, left some of the more pressing questions unanswered. The author hinted about Sean's and Linda's death but, were they connected? I also didn't care for the ending, I felt like it was rushed and abrupt. I didn't like that there was a lot of references to pop culture or the government that some readers wouldn't understand if they weren't familiar with it.

Book Review - Jackie's Star by Miss Lori

Jackie always wished that she could fly. One night, a star grants Jackie her wish to flying. As Jackie experiences the joy of flying she meets new friends along the way. They teach her that sometimes, you are perfect the way you are. I thought the illustrated book was an okay read but, taught children and important topic. Personally, I felt that the story didn't flow smoothly and I wasn't a fan of the illustration style. However, children who like whimsical designs might enjoy this book more than I did.
