Book Review - Ice Wolves (Elementals, #1) by Amie Kaufman

In Vallen, ice wolves and scorch dragons are sworn enemies that live separate lives apart from each other. Twelve year old orphan Anders and his twin sister, Rayna, only have each other. So, when Anders take one elemental form and Rayna takes another, he wonders if they are even related. Even though Anders starts to question if they are even related, he does know Rayna is his only friend. She is nothing like dragons who are cruel to others and they steal children from their family.

Anders decide the only way to save his sister is to join the Ulfar Academy. The academy is a school for young wolves that teaches them to value loyalty to the pack over everything else. However, Anders is more loyal to his sister than being obedient and loyal to the pack.

I thought this was an interesting book but, I felt like the book was short on details and story. I felt like the book finished without the story really progressing and I didn't really learn anything new. When the book ended, I was left with more questions than answers. I wish the author shaved off some portions and added more details about the Elementals. I felt like the ending was abrupt and I wish there was more story in book one to keep me interested in the series.

Book Review - Trillium Sisters 3: Fashionable Disaster + Giveaway

The Trills discover a natural spring in a rocky enclosure. They decide it would be the perfect location for a spa. They think the community would benefit from one but, the supplies are not cheap. They decide to host a fashion show to raise the funds. Thankfully, everyone in the community is excited to lend a hand.

Clare is the local fashionista and believes she should be in charge since it was her idea. Instead of leading her sisters, she ends up bossing them around and refuses to listen to their input. The girls end up fighting with each other and a landslide causes Clare to be trapped in the enclosure. Giselle and Emmy are on the other side of the rock wall but they are unable to help her. Will the trio be able to put their differences aside to help Clare?

The book was a cute and quick read that teaches young readers about leading, friendships, working together, and forgiveness. While this was the third book in the series, it could be read as a standalone. However, I recommend reading the books in order because there were some character nuances that could be missed.

**Disclosure - I received a free unedited copy of this book in exchange for an honest opinion**

Being bossy leads to big problems, and only the Trills coming together can save the day in the third book in the Trillium Sisters series, perfect for fans of Mia Mayhem and The Wish Fairy.

When the Trills discover a rocky enclosure with natural hot spring while hiking, they realize it could be the location for the perfect new addition to the village--a spa! But all of the supplies they'll need aren't going to come cheap, so they decide they'll organize a fashion show to raise funds. Luckily, everyone in Trillsville is willing to lend a hand to make the show a success.

As the local fashionista, Clare thinks she's the clear choice to be in charge. But instead of leading, she's just super bossy, refusing to listen to anyone else's input. After an epic Trills blowup, rain leads to a landslide, leaving Clare trapped inside the enclosure and Giselle and Emmy on the other side of the rock wall, unable to help her. Will the sisters be able to put aside their differences to join forces (and join charms) so they can channel their powers and skills into getting Clare free?

With energetic black-and-white illustration throughout, Fashionable Disaster focuses on family, community, environmental stewardship, and learning to work together as a team, continuing this magical series.

Book Review - The Girls in the Picture by Melanie Benjamin

It's 1914, and twenty-five-year-old Frances Marion is ready for a change. She left her second husband and Northern California for the lure of Los Angeles. She is determined to live independently and follow her own dreams. While trying to decide what she wants to focus on, Marion comes across something called "flickers". Flickers is a new silent movie capturing the hearts and attention of people.

Frances believes it's her calling to take part of this fledgling industry. She is excited that she is able to write stories for people to view. Marion is besotted when she makes the acquaintance of actress Mary Pickford and befriends her. Mary is known for her signature golden curls and her charm. She is known to people as "America's Sweetheart".

When their ambitions gets challenged by men around them and the limitations imposed on their gender, they realize  success comes at a price. Mary is the world's highest paid actress and she struggles to live the life she wants under the spotlight. She is afraid of losing her fans but, when she finds herself in love with a fellow actor Douglas Fairbanks, she has to decide if she is willing to lose her fame for love. Frances longs to share her life with someone but, she's afraid that she would have to give up her career.

At first I was really enjoying the novel and learning more about the two women. However, towards the middle of the book, I felt like the novel became boring and repetitive. I felt like the author tried describing how things might have happened but, failed to talk about how the characters really felt until the very end of the book. I felt like the book would have been better if it was shorter and had character development. I did like reading about their accomplishments and their experience in the industry.

Book Review - Call Me Elizabeth Lark by Melissa Colasanti

Twenty years ago near the Oregon coast, Myra Barkley's daughter has disappeared from the rocky beach near the family inn. For the past twenty years Myra has stayed at the front desk of the inn waiting for her child to come home. One rainy day, Myra's wish comes true. Someone who looks like her daughter, Charlotte,  walks through the door and with a child of her own.

Elizabeth Lark is on the run with her son, Theo, from an abusive husband. She return to her hometown against her better judgment to hide from him. She decides to stop at the Barkley Inn to figure out the next steps. Myra insists that Elizabeth is her long lost child and offers Elizabeth a safety net she desperately needs for her son. Elizabeth knows that she isn't Myra's daughter and she finds herself intertwines with the family.

Elizabeth's return sparks a renewed interest in her disappearance. The new spreads of her return but, someone knows that Charlotte  didn't disappear on her own. Someone is desperate to keep what happened twenty years ago a secret.

I thought this book was an okay read. I had a hard time liking some of the characters and couldn't understand them. For example, Myra was upset that  Charlotte disappeared and kept hoping she would return. I felt like she was devoted to this daughter but, all her other kids it was like she didn't really "care" for.  There was two separate times when her daughters needed her but, she chose her husband but, then she seems to be fighting with him all the time. I found some of the dialogue to be unrealistic and choppy at times. The book was slow in the beginning and the middle and then towards the end everything just happened so fast that it felt unrealistic. The twist at the end was a bit predictable and expected.

Book Review - The Summer Sisters (Juniper Springs, #2) by Sara Richardson

The Buchanan sisters share everything including their inherited Juniper Inn. The sisters plan to remodel and do a grand re-opening of the inn. However, their mother, Lillian, refuses to attend the party because of her decades long feud with her sister, Sassy.

Rose is determined to make the celebration an extravagant one to celebrate both the inn and Sassy. Even if it means requesting the help from a certain surly hardware store owner to help with the renovations. Dahlia is heartbroken that her marriage has failed. She decides to move closer to her family. She and her kids are starting to rebuild their lives when Dahlia questions if she is ready to fall in love again. She is worried about the stability she has worked hard to give her children.

Sassy has missed her sister and tried to reconnect. However, they are both two stubborn to reconcile. When Sassy discovers something that might change her life forever, will it be too late for them to reconnect?

I thought the book was a cute and cozy romantic read. This was the second book in the series but, can be read as a standalone. This was my first book in the series and I felt like I missed some nuances between the characters. The story was told from alternating point of views and a few times I got confused between the sisters. I thought the book was a cute read and look forward to reading more books in the series. If you like Hallmark movies, you will enjoy this novel.

Book Review - The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware

Rowan Caine was looking for something online when she stumbles across her dream job. The job seems like the perfect opportunity for her. The job is a live-in nanny with a generous salary. When Rowan is invited to interview at the Heatherbrae House, she is smitten with the luxurious smart house. The house is situated in the Scottish Highlands and it is fitted with all modern conveniences.

Rowan believes her luck has finally turned around when she gets the job. However, she doesn't realize the dangers she unleashed on herself when she takes the job -- a child is dead and she is accused of murder.

The story unfolds as Rowan is writing to her solicitor from prison. She tries to explain the situation that leads up to her predicament. She explains that she was constantly under surveillance with the cameras in the house along with the constant malfunctioning technology. She felt she was constantly tired because the speakers will malfunction and wake her up in the middle of the night.  The girls that Rowan was contracted to babysit turns out to behave badly and Rowan struggles to maintain control with them. She was told that one parent would always be home to help but, Rowan has been left days on end by herself with the kids. Rowan knows she made mistakes but, she isn't capable of murder and the real killer is out there.

The novel did move very slowly in the beginning. The book was exciting and kept me on edge but, I can't say that I was in love with the ending. I felt like it was a cop-out. I felt like a lot of details were spent talking about the house or how Rowan was struggling with the kids than building the story. However, I would still read her other books in hopes that they are better than this one.

Book Review - You Are Not Alone by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen

Shay Miller wants to find love but, she finds herself in love with her roommate, Sean. Sean is in love with his girlfriend, Jodie. She works hard at her job but, finds it to be a dead-end and underappreciated.  She wants to have a kinship with others but, find herself lonely and without friends.

Shay's life changes when she meets the Moore sisters. Cassandra and Jane are the definitions of perfection and glamorous. Shay is envious of their lives and wants to be just like them. When they accept Shay as their friend, Shay is willing to do anything for them to be their friend. How far will Shay go to prove her loyalty to them?

I have read the other books by the duo and enjoyed them. This book was also an enjoyable read towards the end. While the twists were surprising, I wasn't exactly blown away. I felt that the novel had too many characters with a different back story. It was hard keeping track of the different people and their history. I wasn't very fond of the main character, Shay because she kept making bad choices that made her look desperate for a friend. I felt like the story was a bit convoluted and long-winded but, I am still excited about their next book.

Book Review - The Stolen Ones by Owen Laukkanen

It is a rainy summer evening in Cass County, Minnesota when a deputy steps out of a diner and ends up dead a few minutes later. BCA agent Kirk Stevens is called to help solve the case as he is nearby on vacation. The local police have a suspect in custody, a young woman sitting over the body. The woman speaks no English, has no ID, and is holding the deputy's gun.

As Stevens and his partner, Carla Windermere, dig into the case, they find themselves tangled in a massive web of international kidnapping and prostitution. The two agents will have to travel across the country to find the person behind the crimes. Will they be able to solve the case before more innocent people get hurt?

This was my first novel by the author and I can't say I am a fan. I thought the novel was pretty boring and straightforward. There were no surprises and the story goes exactly how you would expect it to go. I didn't care for any of the characters or even the main leads of the story.

Oh, this book was such a joy to read! The characters were all well developed and I couldn't wait to see if they got their happy ending. I also like that the romance in the novel didn't have a lot of childish back and forth but, characters who display their true feeling. The book was such an emotional rollercoaster, you can feel each of the characters' pain and joy. I can't wait to read other books by the author.

Book Review - The Sweeney Sisters by Lian Dolan + Giveaway

The three Sweeney sisters grew up happy in their small seaside town of Southport, Connecticut. Liza, Maggie, and Tricia are still reeling from the after-effects of their mother's death from cancer over fifteen years ago. The sisters have drifted apart and have their own lives. When news of their beloved father, Bill Sweeney, an international famous literary genius and the renowned professor had died, the sisters return to their childhood home.

They are unsure of what their lives will look like without their father. They decide to throw an Irish wake to honor him. As guests pay their respects to Bill, one guest decides to crash the party because she is a Sweeney sister too.

Based in Washington, DC journalist Serena Tucker decided to test her DNA on a whim. She learns that she is a 50% genetic match with a childhood neighbor - Maggie Sweeney. It turns out that Serena's WASP mother, Birdie, had a history with Bill Sweeney. Serena's entire identity is thrown into a loop and she tries to come to terms with her mother's secrets.

Will the Sweeney sisters be able to accept their new sister? What will this secret hold for Bill's legacy?  Are there any other secrets Bill has kept from his family?

I thought the novel was an interesting read. I felt like there was enough to keep readers interested in reading more but, not enough to fall out of their seat gasping for air. I did feel that there were some slow gaps. I felt like this novel was more like a cozy romantic read rather than Jerry Springer-level family dysfunction read.

Praise for THE SWEENEY SISTERS

"This is a big-hearted belly-laugh of a book, told with wit and poignancy. Family secrets, laughter and tears, shocking reveals, and an uplifting ending make this a story to savor--and share." —Susan Wiggs, New York Times bestselling author of The Oysterville Sewing Circle

"Dolan uses her experience in podcasting with her own sisters to craft believable women characters who worry about real problems and use wry humor to push through dark moments . . . . A warmhearted portrait of love embracing true hearts." —Kirkus

An accomplished storyteller returns with her biggest, boldest, most entertaining novel yet—a hilarious, heartfelt story about books, love, sisterhood, and the surprises we discover in our DNA that combines the wit of Jonathan Tropper with the heart of Susan Wiggs.

Maggie, Eliza, and Tricia Sweeney grew up as a happy threesome in the idyllic seaside town of Southport, Connecticut. But their mother’s death from cancer fifteen years ago tarnished their golden-hued memories, and the sisters drifted apart. Their one touchstone is their father, Bill Sweeney, an internationally famous literary lion and college professor universally adored by critics, publishers, and book lovers. When Bill dies unexpectedly one cool June night, his shell-shocked daughters return to their childhood home. They aren’t quite sure what the future holds without their larger-than-life father, but they do know how to throw an Irish wake to honor a man of his stature.

But as guests pay their respects and reminisce, one stranger, emboldened by whiskey, has crashed the party. It turns out that she too is a Sweeney sister.

When Washington, DC based journalist Serena Tucker had her DNA tested on a whim a few weeks earlier, she learned she had a 50% genetic match with a childhood neighbor—Maggie Sweeney of Southport, Connecticut. It seems Serena’s chilly WASP mother, Birdie, had a history with Bill Sweeney—one that has remained totally secret until now.

Once the shock wears off, questions abound. What does this mean for William’s literary legacy? Where is the unfinished memoir he’s stashed away, and what will it reveal? And how will a fourth Sweeney sister—a blond among redheads—fit into their story?

By turns revealing, insightful, and uproarious, The Sweeney Sisters is equal parts cautionary tale and celebration—a festive and heartfelt look at what truly makes a family.
